European Democracy LabThe European Democracy Lab (also known as EuDemLab) is a non-profit think tank based in Berlin. It was founded by Ulrike Guérot and Viktoria Kupsch in 2014 and is affiliated with the European School of Governance (eusg).[1] Its work focuses on new ideas for Europe in the spirit of the European common good beyond the nation state. Developing a transnational paradigm and exploring alternative conceptions of the European polity are approached by connecting work in the fields of research, advocacy and culture.[2] Topics and FocusTheoretical backgroundThe work of the European Democracy Lab is committed to Ulrike Guérot’s vision of a European Republic based on the equality of all European citizens before the law and the empowerment of the regions.[3][4] This theoretical background builds the foundation of all activities of the think tank. Projects and ActivitiesCultureThe European Democracy Lab was the initiator and coordinator of the European Balcony Project[5], a polito-artistic intervention that took place on 10 November 2018. The project was carried out by approximately 130 decentralized and individual events in over 27 European countries. At 4 p.m., artists and citizens read out a manifesto in a public space and therefore performatively proclaimed the European Republic.[6][7] The manifesto was written by Ulrike Guérot, Robert Menasse The aim of the project was to spark a debate about European democracy beyond nation states. Since all proclamations were framed with talks, panel discussions and other forms of debates, the project hoped to raise awareness for European citizenship, civic equality and the need of citizen action in regard to the future of Europe. It therefore also made an effort in the spirit of the European mantra “Unity in Diversity”.[9] It was also claimed to be a commemoration of the anniversary of the end of WWI and the proclamation of several Republics in 1918 (Austria, Bavaria, Weimar) and signal a turn from a European history of warfare towards a common and peaceful future at the same time.[10] ResearchThe European Democracy Lab undertakes a research project called Regional Parliaments Lab (RegioParl) which focuses on the role of the regions in EU politics.[11] The research is carried out by the European Democracy Lab in Berlin as well as partners at the WZB, Forum Morgen, the Danube University Krems[12], the Jagiellonian University in Kraków and the Eberhard-Karls-University The theoretical background of the research project is the empowerment of the regions as basic and administrative units of a European Republic. Following the research part, the European Democracy Lab plans to work with regional parliaments that are interested in deepening their participation in the European policy process.[14] AdvocacyBesides the future cooperation with regional parliaments, the European Democracy Lab frequently organizes events to promote political debate which is carried out in the spirit of its values and mission[15]. The current event series is called “Progress in Regressive Times” and aims to create a space for open discussion of a wide range of related topics.[16][17] References1. ^{{Cite web|url=https://re-publica.com/de/member/4061|title=Ulrike Guérot|website=re:publica|language=de|access-date=2018-12-12}} 2. ^{{cite web|title=About us - European Democracy Lab|periodical=|publisher=|url=https://europeandemocracylab.org/en/about-us|deadurl=|format=|accessdate=2018-11-09|archiveurl=|archivedate=|last=|date=|year=|month=|day=|language=en-US|pages=|quote=}} 3. ^{{Cite web|url=https://european-republic.eu/en/|title=Homepage of The European Republic - The European Republic|website=european-republic.eu|language=en|access-date=2018-12-12}} 4. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/feb/07/european-union-power-citizens-republic|title=Now the EU needs to hand power to its citizens.
