The Ewer of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune is a gold reliquary found in the treasury of the monastery at Saint-Maurice d'Agaune. Speculation surrounds it's origination and date of creation. The enameled ewer is one of the many treasures found at the Saint-Maurice d'Agaune monastery. DescriptionThe Ewer is 30.3cm high with a long neck and two rounded discs forming the body. The intricate cloisonné work utilizes irregular shaped sapphires, and other deep enamel of emerald green and dark blue.[1] LocationThe ewer is located in the sixth century monastery located in the small city of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune in Switzerland overlooking the Rhône river. OriginThe date and origination of the ewer is highly debated among art historians and students. The debate includes belief that it originated from Oriental, Islamic, Carolingian and Sasanian origins.[1] Most recently, it has been determined that it is a ninth-eleventh century Carolingian reliquary.[2] References1. ^1 {{Cite journal|last=Aga-Oglu|first=Mehmet|date=1946|title=Is the Ewer of Saint Maurice d'Agaune a Work of Sasanian Iran?|url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/3047073|journal=The Art Bulletin|volume=28|issue=3|pages=160–170|doi=10.2307/3047073}} 2. ^{{Cite journal|last=Bálint|first=Cs.|date=2006|title=A note on the research on the ewer with enamel plaques of St. Maurice d'Agaune|url=https://dx.doi.org/10.1556/aarch.57.2006.1-3.22|journal=Acta Archaeologica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae|volume=57|issue=1-3|pages=281–289|doi=10.1556/aarch.57.2006.1-3.22|issn=0001-5210|via=}} |
