False Confessions is a 2017 French film directed by Luc Bondy and co-directed by Marie-Louise Bischofberger. The film is an adapation of the play Les Fausses Confidences by Marivaux. Though the play was written first performed in 1737, the film takes place in modern day Paris and stars Isabelle Huppert as Araminte, a wealthy widow, and Louis Garrel as Dorante, an impoverished man from a good family who woos her.

Plot

Dorante (Louis Garrel) is due to inherit money from his wealthy uncle, Rémy, but in the meantime is impoverished. His uncle and his friend, Dubois, conspire to have him hired as the private secretary for a wealthy widow, Araminte (Isabelle Huppert). Dorante's uncle plans for him to seduce Marton, a pretty young woman who also works for Araminte, but Dorante has his sights set on Araminte herself.

Araminte's mother wants her to marry a wealthy count she is having a dispute over land with, thus ending the dispute and making her even richer. Araminte is not favourably inclined to the match and asks Dorante to look into the dispute to decide whether she should sue or not. In the meantime Dubois tells her that he knows Dorante because the man fell wildly and desperately in love with her six months earlier. Araminte is flattered and decides to keep Dorante on believing that he will fall out of love with her the more time they spend together.

Rémy's uncle comes to him with an offer, telling him that a wealthy woman has offered to marry him. Dorante refuses the offer in front of Araminte who finds herself becoming more attracted to him. Meanwhile Rémy thinks that Dorante has refused due to his feelings for Marton.

Dubois and Dorante arrange for Araminte to come across several portraits of Araminte which Dorante has made, proving that he is in love with her. Araminte struggles over whether to fire Dorante or not, believing that since he has not said anything to her his behaviour is not improper. To try to goad him into confessing his love, Araminte has him write a letter telling the count that she will marry him. At the same time Marton asks Araminte to consent to her marriage to Dorante. Dorante tells Araminte that he does not love Marton but doesn't have the heart to break it to her. Instead he tells her that he is in love with a woman well above his station and he cannot tell her to avoid bringing shame onto her. Dorante reveals that he has a portrait of the woman he loves leading Araminte to reveal she has the portrait of her he has drawn. The two passionately embrace but are caught by Marton, who throws a shoe at them.

Returning to the house Marton tells Dubois that Dorante must be fired and Dubois tells her that he knows of a love letter Dorante has written. Marton steals the letter.

Reception

The film was not well received though Huppert was praised for her giving the film "frissons of mystery and delight".^[1]
