[6]This Title was conferred to Grand Master Puran Andrew Gurung, a 9th DAN Taekwondo professional. IntroductionThe title of “ Pioneer Instructor”, “Father of Taekwondo” or “Founder of Taekwondo” gives recognition to the first DAN level taekwondo professional who has started teaching in his/her country or territory this title is awarded by Taekwondo Official Halls Of Fame after verifying the authenticity of proper evidences of the claim. However if it is later discovered that there was someone previous to that of the awarded instructor the title may shift to the older one while the designee may be referred “Pioneer”. Criteria for the Title[7]The title holder must fulfill the following criteria
HistoryMaster Jimmy R. Jagtiani was awarded with the title earlier by the Official Taekwondo Halls of Fame but later with new information updates and verification Grand Master Puran Andrew Gurung was conferred the title of the Father of Taekwondo India and Master Jimmy was considered as the Pioneer of Taekwondo in India The ControversyThe conferring of this title to Grand Master Jimmy R Jagatiani was challenged because it was reported that GM Jagtiani started teaching Taekwondo in India in 1975, one year after Grand Master Puran Andrew Gurung. Upon verification it was confirmed that GM P A Gurung started teaching Taekwondo in 1974 in India, preceding GM Jimmi R Jagatiani. GM Gurung completed his training in Taekwondo under Korean Grand Master Lee Pyung Pal, and earned his 2nd Dan in 1973. Grand Master Gurung established Taekwondo in Kolkata, Southern, North East and Northern parts of India.
