Their company as well as other companies such as Liberation in Truth Social Justice Center (LIT) and a gay-owned retail store St.James & Company unfortunately closed down after a decade[1]. Halsey street was deemed a gay hub during the 1970s and 1980s due to the rise of club scenes[2]. Eventually the street was recognized in the queer community as Black Lesbian run entrepreneurship. FoundersIn 1998, Kimberlee Williams rented an office space because she was desired to be an entrepreneur[3]. After failing, she reignited FEMWORKS in 2004 with Tamara Fleming. Williams was the CEO and Fleming was the COO[4]. PurposeThe founders wanted to make their racial and sexual orientation as two Black gay women to be well known as their company[1]. The company strives to connect with every day people[4]. They strive to create relationships between their clients and delivering quality campaign tactics[5][6] . GoalsFEMWORKS strive to be involved in work that positively shapes attitudes towards marginalized queer people..[1] The entrepreneurship focuses on campaign development, campaign photography and event production to help their clients [4] SignificanceTheir marketing strategies and being openly queer was a big part of the Newark's queer community.[1] Their appeal targets a diverse amount of sectors such as: government (County of Essex) , health (African American Office of Gay Concerns) , education (Eagle Academy), community and economic development (Lincoln Park), arts/tourism (Newark Public Library) and social entrepreneurship (New Jersey Social Innovation Institute) [4]. They also were involved in regional, national and global marketing campaigns[6]. AchievementsIn 2010, FEMWORKS collaborated with the African American Office of Gay Concerns (AAOGC) on the "Status is Everything" campaign[7]. As part of the campaign, Fleming photographed a transgender woman to advocate for HIV testing.[1] Fleming photographed twenty queer individuals as part of a public history project- the Queer Newark Oral History Project[1][8]. FEMWORKS created the New Jersey LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce to rectify the absence of diversity inside the National LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce[1]. Awarded the 2012 Founding Member, Made In Newark Award[9]. Williams won the 2014 New Jersey Social Entrepreneur of the Year at Rutgers Business School 1st Annual Entrepreneurship Awards Ceremony[10] .
