Florian Graf (born 1980 in Basel) is a visual artist and architect who works with sculpture, drawing, installation, photography and film.

Life

Florian Graf studied architecture at the ETH in Zurich, Switzerland, graduating in 2005. As a student, he was a co-founder of the ETH House of Science in Afghanistan. The project was the result of the Jubilee competition "Luftschloss" of ETH Zurich which he won with two fellow students by suggesting they build a university in Bamiyan instead of an ephemeral Pavilion in Zurich.[1] After its completion in 2006, he worked with Robert Wilson in New York and attended a Master of Fine Arts at the Edinburgh College of Art. He was a postgraduate scholar at the Royal Drawing School in London[2] and from 2009 to 2010 a Fulbright Fellow at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since then, he has lived in Berlin with the iaab-residency, in Rome as a member of the Istituto Svizzero, and after some time in Athens as a scholar at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. His work is shown internationally and has received several awards. Florian Graf has taught at art schools, e.g. in the form of workshops at HEAD in Geneva and at HKB in Berne and also as a tutor for Art and Architecture at the ETH Zurich in Zurich. Graf currently lives and works in Basel, Switzerland.

Work

Florian Graf’s work incorporates sculpture, drawing, installation, photomontage and short film. Amongst exhibitions in galleries, he engaged in a number of art projects in public space. He adopts space and the built environment as a tool to explore the interrelation between social, political, and cultural forces.[3] Thus, he explores the psychological and emotional impact of architecture and examines the relationship between the human body, its built environment, public space and the roles individuals inhabit in society. Drawing and modeling within an image and mainly sculptural projects are central to Graf’s artistic practice.

The art critic and theoretician Michael Newman wrote about Florian Graf: "His art is utopian not by projecting a future in juxtaposition with the present, but by making the present face itself".[4]

Since his early youth, Florian Graf has been systematically working on his Drawing Books.[5] They are the means to develop most of his artwork.

[6]

Graf skilfully and deliberately undermines the tendency of language to turn assumptions into facts: he breaks down the linearity of its claims into complexities and ambiguities that counteract the preconceptions that underlie our reading and seeing.[7]
