Career
Floris Wuyts is a professor of Physics at the University of Antwerp, and holds visiting professorships at the University of Ghent and King’s College London. He is the lead Investigator of two large projects of the European Space Agency (ESA) studying cosmonauts before and after spaceflight in the International Space Station (ISS), with an emphasis on their physiological function and brain neuroplasticity[1]. Wuyts and his team were among the first to uncover the link between the autonomous system and the vestibular system in humans[2], and they have also done pioneering research on the effect of microgravity[3] and weightlessness[4] on the human brain[5].
In 2008 Wuyts worked with Tania Stadsbader to write a book on the treatment of balance and other vestibular conditions[6]. The book has become an ongoing project to support people with these conditions, and includes a website[7] and a children's book[8].
In November 2018 Floris Wuyts was appointed Minister of Science of Asgardia[9], where he promotes the view that "Asgardia's vision of equal access to space research for all human beings is the key to the future of the modern world".[10]
Sport
Floris Wuyts is a passionate sailor, competing in the sports catamaran F16 class in the 2016 world championships[11] and the 2018 European Championships[12].
