The Fox River Valley Conference, or FRVC, was a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) affiliated high school athletic conference in northeastern Wisconsin. Formed in 1923.[1], it was in existence until the conclusion of the 2006 spring sport season. Afterwards, the conference and its eight members joined with four schools from the Bay Conference to form the Fox River Classic Conference[2]

Conference history

1923-1970

The Fox River Valley Conference was established in 1923 by charter members: Appleton, Fond du Lac, Green Bay East, Green Bay West, Manitowoc, Oshkosh, and Sheboygan.[1] A year later in 1924 Marinette would join the conference and remain as its eighth member until 1936. In 1938 Sheboygan would rename itself Sheboygan Central, as a year later in 1939 Sheboygan North would open and join the FRVC, bringing its membership back to eight. Nothing would change again until 1960 when Sheboygan Central shut its doors and was replaced by Sheboygan South after major population shift to the south side of Sheboygan.[3] In 1964 Green Bay Southwest joined the conference followed by Green Bay Preble a year later, after leaving the now defunct NEW Conference after 1963;[4] This would bring the FRVC membership up to 10 schools. Four years later in 1967 Appleton East was founded joining the conference, prompting Appleton to change its name to Appleton West. A year later in 1968 Neenah would join. The FRVC hit its peak membership at this point with 12 schools.

1970-2006

A major conference realignment happened in 1970 when Appleton East, Appleton West, Oshkosh, and Neenah left the conference to join up with Kaukauna, Kimberly, and Menasha to form the Fox Valley Association.[5] With the loss of four teams the FRVC would bring in Two Rivers, but would leave four years later in 1973 to join the FVA, although it would leave that conference two years later as well[5]. It would remain that way until the 1989-1990 school year, when Fond du Lac left the conference to join the Fox Valley Association for all sports except football still playing in the FRVC and would not fully leave until the fall of 1993.[5] Notre Dame Academy would replace them keeping membership at eight. The FRVC would come to a conclusion at the end 2006-07 school year when the remaining schools joined Ashwaubenon, Bay Port, De Pere, and Pulaski to form the current Fox River Classic Conference. Of the original seven charter members the only ones that remind were Green Bay East, Green Bay West, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan, now Sheboygan South. Although the FRCC was essentially the FRVC plus the four schools from the Bay Conference, the FRCC regards itself as a separate conference and does not claim the FRVC's history as its own.

Member Schools

The conference maintained around 8 schools for most of its existence, with many new schools opening or changing names throughout. Membership peaked at 12 in the late 1960's before 4 schools left to form the Fox Valley Association[6]. All 8 final members joined the newly formed FRCC in 2007, although Green Bay West and Green Bay East later left for the Bay Conference in 2015.[7]
