Frances Fullerton Jones Neilson was born in 1912 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She graduated from the Agnes Irwin School in Philadelphia, plus was educated in private schools in England as she spent much of her childhood in Surrey, England. Other places she spent a great deal of time included Dutch Guiana and Keene Valley, New York. Frances came from a English family. Her middle name Fullerton came from her great grandfather, Sir William Fullerton, who is buried in Westminster Abbey. During her time in England, Frances visited Buckingham Palace where she was presented to the King and Queen. Besides working in the media doing serials and children's scripts for NBC radio broadcasts (her first experience was broadcasting a children's program: "Orgets in the Air!"), and for Child Life. Frances did charity work, serving on two committees of the Association of Junior Leagues of America and was on the Board of Managers of the New York League. Frances also enjoyed oil painting and gardening, as well as skating and skiing in the winter and sailing and swimming in the summer, and horseback riding all year around. Winthrop C. Neilson Jr. (1907-1987) was born in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Winthrop lived in Buck Hill Falls, PA and for fifteen years at the National Arts Club in New York City. Winthrop went to The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Winthrop and Frances met and married in Philadelphia. During his early twenties, he spent time in Europe, cycling and painting in Southern France, along with visiting Rome, Italy where he came up with his linear style. Together with Frances they also traveled to the interior of South America. He did a great deal of technical writing for 20 years with a industrial concern, becoming a executive officer in public relations and personnel for the Aluminum Company of America. At age 39 he resigned to take up writing and painting. He was a member of the Society of American Artists and National Arts Club. He was known as an accomplished illustrator of children's book plus collaborated with Frances on adult and juvenile books. The couple was assigned to write in Europe and Africa, giving them the opportunity to live in Portugal, Spain and Italy. Together they have been correspondents for UNICEF for field projects in Spain and Morocco. Their work in these areas resulted in news stories, magazine articles, and a UNICEF booklet for world distribution. Winthrop was the recipient of a Freedom Foundation Award for one of his editorials. From the 1940's to the 1980's, Frances and Winthrop collaborated on numerous biographical works and religious romances for children and adults. Their works encompas subjects as varied as art history, economics, and biblical literature. The Neilson's did extensive research on the beginnings of the Christian faith, notably in the Vatican Library in Rome. Frances and Winthrop raised their family (sons Winthrop C. III and John F., adopted daughters Kaleen and Eclipse) in New York City and Lloyd Neck, New York plus the family enjoyed extended stays in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, as well as on Captiva Island, Florida when access was only via ferry.
