Francisco X. Stork is a Mexican-American young adult fiction author known for Marcelo in the Real World, The Last Summer of the Death Warriors, The Memory of Light, and Disappeared.[1]

History

Francisco X. Stork was born in Mexico to Ruth Arguelles, a single mother.[2] He was adopted at age 9 by Charles T. Stork, an American citizen born in the Netherlands.[1][2] Prior to being adopted, Stork lived in Juarez, Mexico.[2] After his adoption, he immigrated to the U.S. and lived in El Paso, Texas.[1][2]

Stork attended Spring Hill College from 1971-1975.[3] He earned an M.A. from Harvard University on a Danforth Fellowship.[4] Stork graduated with a J.D from Columbia University.[1]

Stork was an attorney for 33 years, the last 15 of which he worked for MassHousing, a state agency that specialized in developing affordable housing.[1]

In 2010, Stork's young adult novel Marcelo in the Real World won the Schneider Family Book Award.[1][5]

In 2011, The Last Summer of the Death Warriors won the Amelia Elizabeth Walden Award for "a book that exemplifies literary excellence, widespread appeal, and a positive approach to life in young adult literature."[1][6] It also won the Young Reader Award by The Boston Authors Club.[7]

In 2017, The Memory of Light won the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award for "authors and illustrators who create literature that depicts the Mexican-American experience."[8]

Disappeared won the 2018 Young Adult Award from the Texas Institute of Letters for literary works that concern the state of Texas.[1][9] The book was designated an Honor Book for the 2018 Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children's Literature.[1][10]

Stork has stated that he struggles with depression and addiction.[1] He has also been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.[11]
