Frank Smith is president and chief executive officer of Anschutz Film Group (AFG) and Walden Media. He has been with the company since 2003, and oversees all aspects of AFG’s operations including development, physical production, publishing, marketing and outreach, finance, legal and business affairs. Smith also works directly with The Anschutz Corporation on strategic planning and general operational issues.[1][2] 

Early life

Frank H. Smith was born in Brooklyn, NY. He was raised and went to high school in New York City until moving to Los Angeles with his family.[3] He attended Pepperdine University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. After working at The Gersh Agency in Hollywood, he moved to Boston and attended New England School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor.[3]

Career

In 1998 he began working at New Line Cinema/Fine Line Features, where he was Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs. [3] He was then tapped in 2003 to help build up business and legal affairs for AFG/Walden Media, a startup production company owned and controlled by Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz. [3] At AFG/Walden Media he oversaw large budget motion picture franchise projects with major studios on films including Walt Disney for the Academy Award-winner The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, New Line Cinema for Journey to the Center of the Earth, as well as the second and third Narnia films, Prince Caspian, and Voyage of the Dawn Treader for Twentieth Century Fox. [4][5] As President & CEO he has oversaw such breakout films as the Julia Roberts hit Wonder with Lionsgate, A Dog’s Purpose with Amblin Entertainment, and Walt Disney’s and Steven Spielberg’s The BFG. He currently oversees all aspects of AFG/Walden’s operations, including overseeing Walden Pond Press Publishing, working closely with The Anschutz Corporation on strategic planning and operational issues.

Awards and Honors

Smith is a noted author in the area of copyright law, publishing Tasini v. New York Times, Co.: A Copyright Or A Right To Copy, for the New England Law Review.[6]

Smith received the Association of Media and Entertainment Counsel’s Dan Brandhorst Award for Deal Maker of the Year 2009.[7]

In 2014 Smith delivered a Tedx Talk at Chapman University on the nature of change in the movie industry and its value in a personal sense and a business dynamic.[8]
