Frank Ernest White, English playwright and novelist, was born on 18th August 1927. He spent his early years in Newton Heath, Manchester. At seventeen, after his older brother William had been killed at the battle of Mareth, he volunteered for the wartime Royal Navy and served his time in the British Pacific Fleet. It was then that he began to write. He went on to contribute essays and short fiction to numerous journals and to BBC radio over a number of years. Two novels, 'A Morse code set' and 'A feast of cannibals' were published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1964/5. He was commissioned to write a stage play and subsequently wrote ten for British theatres. They included 'A fatal affair,' 'Wild orchids', 'Brother's keeper,' etc. His two full length plays for BBC Radio 4 were 'Tarra Lengy' and 'Spoil Heap'. Other work included commissions to write plays and entertainments for local councils. After his BBC television documentary 'Very exceptional soldiers' came a book, 'The British in the First World War.' His latest work is 'There was a time,' a novel set in England in 1940, published by Hodder & Stoughton, 2017/8.
