Frans A. Janssen (*1939), Dutch book historian, has worked in the fields of textual criticism, bibliography and librarianship, Emeritus Professor of Book and Library History at the University of Amsterdam (1989-2004) and former director of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica, Amsterdam (1983-2003). His doctoral dissertation Zetten en drukken in de achttiende eeuw (1982, rev. ed. 1986) was rewarded with the Menno Hertzberger Prize. Janssen published books and a series of articles on the history of printing techniques, of typographical design and of book collecting. A selection of his articles appeared in 2004 in Technique and Design in the History of Printing, covering subjects as printing presses, French and Dutch printer's manuals and layout of books around 1500 and around 1800. From 1990 until 2012 he was a member of the editorial board of the bookhistorical review Quaerendo and between 1991 and 2002 he was a member of the International Board of Trustees of the All-Russian State Library for Foreign Literature, Moscow. From 1997 to 1999 he was chairman of the board of The Best Dutch Book Designs Prize, Amsterdam.
