Funday Factory is a Danish games development studio based in Aarhus. The studio was founded in 2011 by Anders Leicht Rohde and Max Schläger Nielsen[2] and is primarily focused on developing games for mobile platforms. The studio is best known for their development of games like Spellbinders (Co-produced with Kiloo), Axe in Face (developed with HUGO Games) and several LEGO titles.[3] Furthermore the studio has developed several games for external partners within the Danish media industry, toy industry, and health industry.[4] Funday Factory's independent productions include games like Scallywags and Tree Wars.

Funday Factory is owned by Mediaworkers Group which also holds Colibo A/S. From July 2012 until January 2017 Mediaworkers Group also counted Minitutor A/S, a games studio specialised in developing educational games for pre- and primary schoolers in Scandinavia, and until April 2017 Mediaworkers Group also encompassed the digital agency Mediaworkers (acquired by [https://www.kruso.dk/da/ Kruso] in april 2017).[5]

    History

Funday Factory was founded as a two-man company in 2011 in Aarhus by Anders Leicht Rohde and founder of Mediaworkers Max Schläger Nielsen.[2] From the beginning, Funday Factory has focused on making branded games and digital experiences in collaboration with other developers or as work-for-hire deals. Among others, Funday Factory started out developing marketing games for tv-shows on Danish television for the public service channel TV 2 and sister channel TV 2 Zulu. The company has throughout the years engaged in a lot of work for hire projects for toy companies, the health industry, various broadcasting companies and health departments in Danish municipalities. This includes multiple projects with the Danish toy company LEGO.[6] Alongside these projects, Funday Factory has also developed several standalone games since 2013. [6]

In April 2016 Funday Factory launched the game Spellbinders in cooperation with the Danish game studio Kiloo, known for the worldwide success Subway Surfers.[4] Spellbinders is a real-time mobile PvP game in the MOBA genre. The aim of the game is to combine cooperative and competitive gameplay, aiming at a multiplayer experience on small screens. The Spellbinders production, and the other projects during this period, caused a growth in which Funday Factory increased the number of employees from 3 to 25 in the years from 2014 to 2016.[7]

As of late 2018, Funday Factory employs 40 people located in Aarhus, Denmark and also various freelance workers.[8]

    Economy

Since their foundation in 2011, Funday Factory went from three years of deficit to four years of profit during the financial years of 2014-2017.[9] In 2014 the company made a small profit of 12.000 DKK, which increased to 61.000 DKK in 2015, and again to 1.2 million DKK in 2016.[9] In the financial year of 2017, Funday Factory had a profit of 3.4 million DKK and a revenue of 27 million DKK.[8]

Funday Factory's recent games are primarily based on a Free-to-Play model, which means that the players can download the games for free but has the option to pay for additional features or content within the games.[6]
