He came to New York City in 1974, according to a short piece printed in December 1975 in the New York Times, as "a defector" who left his home country because the Hungarian government was "cracking down on the literati".[1] He is an expert in Russian literature and has taught at the University of Virginia, Bucknell University, among others.[2] Although an accomplished and published scholar of literary analysis and Slavic languages, for the past thirty years, he has dedicated himself to art-making.[3][4]

In 1989, Follinus learned he was HIV positive, an experience he describes in a 2018 interview as transformative, propelling his continued engagement with art as a tool for social engagement.[5]

His sculptural work often engages natural and found materials as well as folkloric references in a spare, minimalistic aesthetic, or as he describes it, "minimalism with soul".[6]
