The following years he was employed as a senior anesthesiologist at the National [https://www.medichub.ro/reviste/oncolog-hematolog-ro/scientific-days-at-the-prof-dr-al-trestioreanu-institute-of-oncology-bucharest-id-726-cmsid-68 Institute of Oncology, Bucharest] [4], until his emigration to Israel in 1972. His first Israeli employment was at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa[5]. The Israeli Ministry of Health recognized his specialist diploma in 1973.

In 1976 he established the first Intensive Care Unit at the Rothschild Medical Center, now Bnai Zion Medical Center, Haifa, and was its director until 1986, when he moved to the south of the country. Dr. Gurman established an enlarged department of anesthesia and critical care at Soroka Medical Center (SMC), Beer-Sheva, and acted as chairman of the department between 1991 and 2001. Since 2001 he directed the general intensive care unit at SMC until his retirement in 2005.

In 1993 Dr. Gurman initiated an education project for young anesthesiologists in cooperation with the WFSA, the Committee for Education, offering to its participants to experience with advanced medicine in general and anesthesia-critical care as a specialty. This project brought to Soroka Medical Center 160 young anesthesiologists from Eastern Europe and Kenya, for various periods between one month and one year. The project ended in 2005, and it was transferred to the Wolfson Medical Center[6], Holon. It currently offers fellowship positions for six months in various fields of Anesthesiology to young practitioners from China, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ecuador, Bulgaria, Honduras, Georgia, Kazhakhstan.

In 2006, the World Federation of the Societies of Anesthesiologists (WFSA) approved the establishment of an International School for Instructors in Anesthesia (ISIA[7])[8] following Dr. Gurman's initiative. Groups of 4 instructors from various countries participate to a course during which they are exposed to problem-oriented presentations and discussions. After graduating these instructors are supposed to organize similar courses in their own countries and to teach audiences of young specialists and senior residents, based on their theoretical knowledge and experience. Dr. Gurman served as the Faculty Chairman of this school until 2012.

Since 2012 he has been the chief editor of the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) Newsletter and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the [https://www.linkedin.com/company/esctaic European Society of Computing and Technology in Anesthesia and Intensive Care] (ESCTAIC).

Starting in 2016 he has been the medical adviser of the Inshine Healthcare Industry Management Company[10], a Chinese enterprise that deals with the development of medicine in that country. Since his retirement in 2005 he serves as the special adviser of the Soroka Medical Center director.

Academic activities

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Gurman combined clinical activities with medical education at all levels: medical students, residents, and young specialists, in Israel and abroad[11]. In 1986 he was appointed senior lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FOHS), BGU and full professor in 2000[12]. During 2000-2005 he held the position of vice-dean at FOHS.

In 1974 he was at the University Medical Center Groningen, Holland; during 1980-1981 resident at Toronto General Hospital and during 1984-1985 clinical researcher. In 1993 he was visiting professor at St Mary's Hospital Medical School, London, England; in 1997 at Beth Israel Medical Center, New York, and in 1998 at University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, Canada. His clinical research focused on topics such as: monitoring in anesthesia and critical care, measurement of depth of anesthesia, innovative technology in the domain, organization of organ transplantation and donation in Israel, as well as the professional stress of the anesthesiologist.

His credo, expressed by his clinical and educational activities, implies the fact that anesthesiology is a multi-faceted profession, which demands a large range of experience and theoretical knowledge, clinical judgment, empathy for the patient, thinking versatility and technological abilities.[13] [14][15]

He published manuals on anesthesia and critical care in Hebrew for medical students and first-year residents. His book, Education and teaching in anesthesia in Israel, a bilingual Hebrew-English publication[16] is about aims and techniques of teaching anesthesia and related fields[17]. Another book, Visionaries and dreamers[18] (English), deals with the history of Israeli anesthesiology, describing the life and activity of the twelve founding fathers of the profession in Israel.[19] [20]

Dr. Gurman published 11 chapters in textbooks and manuals and more than 100 papers[21] in professional journals. In 2014 he was appointed permanent collaborator of the weekly Romanian journal Viata Medicala (Medical Life).

Honorary titles

Dr. Gurman's intense and continuous activity regarding the education of new generations of anesthesiologists, especially in the Eastern Europe countries after the fall of the Iron Curtain, was greatly appreciated. As a result, a number of medical universities awarded him the title of doctor honoris causa:

1995 – Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, Romania (his alma mater).

2012 – University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Târgu Mureṣ, Romania[22]

2012 – State University of Medicine, Tbilisi, Georgia[23]

2013 – University of Medicine Nicolae Testemiṭeanu, Chisinau, Republic of Moldova[24][25]

2014 – University of Medicine and Pharmacy Grigore T. Popa, Iaṣi, Romania[26]

In 2013 he was conferred the order of Sanitary Merit as "Commander"[27] by the President of Romania, Mr. Traian Basescu as a recognition of his “contribution to the progress of Romanian medicine, the initiation of education projects for young Romanian anesthesiologists in Israel, and his intense and continuous participation in the various scientific meetings in Romania in the last 20 years, both as speaker and organizer”.[28]

Organization of Congresses

As a member of organizing committees Dr. Gurman seved as chairman and president of numerous international and Israeli Conferences and Symposia in the field of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care.To mention a few: The 20th International Congress of the Israeli Society of Anesthesiology, Tel Aviv (2005); International Congress: The Moldovan Society of Anesthesiology an Reanimation, Chishinau, Republic of Moldova (2007-2018); The International Congress of the Georgian Society of Anestheologyists, Tbilisi, Georgia (2013-2017); The Congress of the European Society of Computing and Technology in Anesthesia and Intensive Care (ESCTAIC), (2012-2018); The 2nd International Symposium of Ambulatory Anesthesia and Analgesia(AAA), Zurich, Switzerland (2019).

Writer

Besides his professional activities as physician, researcher, and educator, Dr. Gurman spends time writing literature. He considers himself a story-teller and claims that the distance between telling and writing a story is a minimal one.[29] The first stories were written in Romanian, his maternal language. Since 2013 he has been a permanent collaborator of the Romanian electronic literature publication, Baabel[30]. He signs most of his novels and stories collections with a nom de plume: Gabriel Ben Meron. In the last years Dr. Gurman has started to publish in Hebrew. His stories are placed in the south of Israel and they reflect professional and daily events, which he has witnessed during his life in that region. His heroes possess a cumbersome personality; they are caught in dangerous situations. Some of them are Romanian Jews. Settled in Israel they experience serious difficulties to adapt to their new country, not only from the economic and professional points of view, but also because of the mentality and cultural differences. They are all secular, but feel Jewish and proud to be part of the new society, in spite of the psychological obstacles. At the same time, they feel prisoners of their former life, which influences their behavior and decisions.

Dr. Gurman believes that the written words have a heavy influence on everyday life. They are to stay and give power to those ready to learn from others' experiences. The literature is a crucial source of information from many points of view: historical, psychological, and cultural. This is the reason that Dr. Gurman choses to deal in his books with people coming from the same places and background as himself. In promoting the story of the Romanian Jews, a subject practically neglected in the Israeli/Hebrew literature, he sees his legacy - his moral obligation towards the generation of his parents and his own generation. Their stories reflect the rich tradition of a community whose vision was always optimistic and in search of harmony with its surroundings. Their stories are to be told in order not to be forgotten.
