History

Gaia Education was officially launched in 2005, following seven years of preparatory work by ecovillage and permaculture designers, and sustainability educators from intentional communities and ecovillages within the Global Ecovillage Network.[1]

Gaia Education launched an Ecovillage Design Education curriculum to contribute to the United Nations’ Decade of Education for Sustainable Development – 2005-2014.[1].

GEESE

Gaia Education is supported by a group of educators called "GEESE"- Global Ecovillage Educators for a Sustainable Earth[2][3]- who first got together in 1998, and met over a series of workshops to formulate their transdisciplinary approach to education for sustainability[4].

Founding members of the GEESE include:

  • Albert Bates
  • Christopher E. Mare
  • Daniel Greenberg[5]
  • Giovanni Ciarlo
  • Helena Norberg-Hodge
  • Hildur Jackson
  • Jonathan Dawson[6]
  • Kosha Anja Joubert[7]
  • Marian Zeitling
  • Marti Mueller
  • Max O. Lindegger[8]
  • May East[9]
  • Ross Jackson

Education for Sustainable Design

Gaia Education uses a “4-D Framework for Integrative Whole Systems Design for Sustainability” in its educational programmes[10]. These four dimensions are: social, ecological, economic and worldview.

Social

The social dimension explores "how to create a shared vision for collective projects and work on communications skills. Inclusive decision making, creative conflict resolution or mediation, and effective work in social networks are part of this dimension"[10].

Ecological

The ecological dimension includes the calculation of a project’s carbon footprint and design for carbon neutrality or carbon sequestration. Local food economies, methodologies of regenerative agriculture, permaculture design principles, cradle-to-cradle design, water resource management, renewable energies and sustainable materials are also introduced in this dimension[10].

Economic

The economic dimension explores diverse strategies for creating and strengthening local economies. It introduces "methods and principles for creating community currencies and exchange systems and new types of economic indicators"[10]. The courses review legal forms, business models and financing mechanisms that can support the creation of social enterprises.

Worldview

This dimension explores "the why of creating sustainable and regenerative cultures. Participants are invited to contemplate the role of spiritual practices like meditation, pilgrimage, prayer or solo-time in nature in creating deeper socio-cultural and ecological ties with the place [they] inhabit and the communities [they] participate in. Studying integral theory, Aldo Leopold’s land ethic, and the importance of a bioregional ‘sense of place’ and ‘sense of belonging’ leads participants to question and become aware of their own perspectives and those of others".[10]

Project Based Learning

Gaia Education's Project-Based Learning is a hands-on learning approach in which participants acquire skills and analytical tools while designing sustainable settlements[10].

Gaia Education works with traditional and indigenous communities in the Global South on their environments and villages management, while addressing climate change vulnerabilities[10][11][12].

Sustainable Development Goals

After the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were ratified in 2015, Gaia Education joined the UNESCO Global Action Programme[13] to support the on-the-ground implementation of the SDGs through diverse educational activities[14][15]
