Geoffrey E. Hill is a professor of biology and the curator of birds at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama.[1] He is best-known for his work on sexual selection and carotenoid-based coloration in house finches. His early research on these topics is summarized in his book, A Red Bird in a Brown Bag.[2][3] Most recently, Hill has shifted focus to the new field of mitonuclear ecology, which proposes that interactions between the mitochondrial and nuclear genomes are key drivers of major biological processes.[4]

Hill received his B.S. from Indiana University in 1983. He completed his M.S. at University of New Mexico in 1986, where he worked on behavior and delayed plumage maturation in black-headed grosbeaks. During his Ph.D. at University of Michigan, Hill initiated his research program investigating plumage color variation in house finches, which resulted in a publication in the journal Nature.[5] He pursued questions of house finch behavior and evolution through his postdoctoral work at Queen's University and joined Auburn University, his current institution, in 1993.[6]

In 2014, he was awarded the William Brewster Memorial Award from the American Ornithologists' Union "for his major contributions to ornithology, including his excellence in avian research, his outstanding record of publications, and his commitment to teaching, training, and outreach in ornithology."[7]
