Gerhard Thonhauser works in academia and is an Austrian innovator, entrepreneur and founder of several start-up companies. He has made significant contributions to digitalization in the oil and gas industry, and introduced automatic operations detection based on real-time sensor data to the industry and collaborated with others to invent the measurement of Invisible Lost Time.

Personal life

Gerhard Thonhauser was born in Wolfsberg, Austria and grew up in an entrepreneurial environment driven by the grocery businesses of his parents. After studying in Austria, the United States and Australia, he lived in Austria from 1998 until 2017 when he relocated to Abu Dhabi, UAE with his wife and partner Bouchra, and their two daughters. Following their common passion to create and build disruptive technologies and build companies.

Career

From a business-oriented education, driven by the family business background, he made a life changing decision to move into petroleum engineering enticed by an international work environment in the largest global industrial sector. In his early years, he was fascinated by information technology and worked on the first commercial software projects during his high-school years.

He saw the opportunities that information technology and software-based solutions would have in the industry he was entering and the value hidden in the data which is collected. After entering the drilling area of petroleum engineering he became passionate about linking an “old industry” with the emerging software industry and web age.

Gerhard Thonhauser started his first company right after graduating as a PhD from Montanuniversitaet Leoben, Austria and subsequently founded TDE Thonhauser Data Engineering GmbH in the year 2000.

In 2003, he was reintroduced into the academic life and was selected to hold the Chair of Drilling and Completion Engineering at Montanuniversitaet Leoben.^[1], Austria. Since 2015, Gerhard Thonhauser acts as the Head of the Petroleum Engineering Department at the same University.

Over the past 18 years he has been building a group of technology companies as TDE Group, and has held various management roles currently acting as the Chairman and CTO of the TDE Group^[2]

Publications

Professor Thonhauser has authored and co-authored more than 100 publications in the area of petroleum engineering, including many SPE Papers^[3] and is an active member and contributor for the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
