The names GIBBS and GIBB arrived in England in 1066 along with Duke William. Those bearing the name were not Normans but Bretonian Knights . Their arrival is recorded at Battle Abbey Sussex (1). Although most of the GIBBS have an S on the end of the name this was not on the original name and the Kentish and Scottish Gibbs spell it without as just GIBB.

The family were Nobles in both Brittany and England with a very rare coat of Arms (2) (3) as all have three battle axes on different colour backgrounds which denote separate lines of the family. The colours can be Red, White, Black and Blue and variations thereof.(2)(3)(4)

The family received lands in Kent (5) the Tamar Valley (6)[1] and Warwick (5)

Evidence of the continued use of the Arms in Brittany can be found in regard to Cardinal; Robert Guibe (8) in regard to his nephew Andre Hamon who's own Arms are in 4 quarters, two for his mother and two for his father.

The Gibb family of Scotland is descended from the same origin and started in Scotland about 1450 when Patrick Gibb married Catherine de Carriber of Linlithgow. (9)

As the family have a long tradition of serving and being close to the Monarchs of England & Scotland (10) there have been many who have attempted to associate themselves with the family claiming the name to be a diminutive of Gilbert and therefore German but his is not the case and to date no evidence has been found in regard to the name Gibson being – Son of Gibb.
