The society was founded in 1828[1], and are the oldest student political society at the University. Originally founded as the Glasgow University Liberal Club, the society has remained affiliated to the Liberal Party, Liberal & Social Democrats, and now, the Liberal Democrats. The society has the aim of advancing the values of liberalism and the policies of the Liberal Democrats on campus and across the Glasgow area. HistoryFounded in 1828 as the Glasgow University Liberal Club, the club was originally a branch of the Liberal Party. As the Liberal Party merged with the Social Democratic Party, the society too changed, renaming as the Glasgow University Liberal Democratic Society in 1993, before renaming to the Glasgow University Liberal Democrats in 1997[2]. The society was founded with the aim to "bring together all Liberal Democrat students within Glasgow University and all those sympathetic to the cause Liberal Democracy", with membership of the society being open to all students of the University of Glasgow, and allowing associate membership to students at the University of Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian University The society has also played a role in elections for the Rector of Glasgow University, most recently in 2015 where the Glasgow University Liberal Democrats ran an unsuccessful campaign to have Vince Cable elected as the Rector[3][4]. Currently, the Glasgow University Liberal Democrats are part of the youth wing of the Liberal Democrats, Young Liberals. They also work on campus to hold social events for members and those interested in the ideology of liberalism, whilst also working with the Glasgow, Scottish, and Federal Liberal Democrats to campaign for elections. BoardThe Glasgow University Liberal Democrats are governed by an elected Board, which is elected annually at an Annual General Meeting of the society.
