The Globophone is a prototype instrument that belongs in the Aerophone family, They are typically constructed from PVC and require a Free-Reed mechanism consisting of a Silicon membrane that vibrates when air is pushed through an acrylic pipe. It was invented by Jake Lee Godfrey in February, 2018.

The Globophone is easily Constructed and doesn't require much craftsmanship to build at any size, unlike it's predecessor, the DIY Children's educational instrument known as the Balloon Bassoon.[1], it has Keys and can produce several notes in different octaves depending on it's size. The Globophone has been built in 7 sizes so far, not all of which have been perfected / prepared to be photographed.

  • Bb Alto
  • Ab Alto
  • Tenor (no longer exists)
  • Baritone
  • Bass
  • Contrabass
  • Subcontrabass

Currently only the Subcontrabass has been photographed and only the Bass and Bb Alto are fully complete.

Balloon Bassoons

"Balloon Bassoon" refers to a DIY toy. They're often made out of cardboard tubing, a Balloon and a plastic mouthpiece which when combined create a single note reminiscent of a Bassoon or Oboe depending on the tubing's Length. Globophones are built with the same mechanism, with the exception that it has a crook or bocal, as opposed to a plastic mouthpiece. The inventor of the Balloon Bassoon is credited to be Bart Hopkin[2]

Invention of the Globophone

Within the more professional world of Music, Globophones have no existing sheet music or standard form or shape, meaning the Globophone is not yet an official recognised instrument. The name was coined by Inventor Jake Lee Godfrey, after the latin terms "Globe", referring to a sphere or similar round object (Globophobia is the fear of balloons, of which the prefix 'Globo' is derived from in this naming process, due to the Balloon-like reed of a Globophone) and "Phone", referring to sound as is with many instruments (e.g. Saxophone, Sousaphone).

The Globophone was first coined as a name for the instrument alongside it's invention in February, 2018. Based off of a Bassoon in aesthetic design, the first Copy was a Tenor Range prototype made from Pink Plastic tubing and was approximately 0.6 metres / 2 feet in length, however this is unconfirmed as the copy no longer exists.

The most refined copy of a Globophone is the Bass Globophone, constructed on 6th March 2018. It was the first of it's kind to have 2 octaves.

Since it's invention, a refined version is yet to be made.
