Globus is an independent bookstore located in San Francisco. Specializing in the Russian editions, it covers a wide range of authors and topics, offers the new and antiquarian books. HistoryThe bookstore was founded by Vladimir Azar (Vladimir Nicholaeivich Azarenko-Zarowsky). He was born in Belgrade (Yougoslavia) of Russian White émigrés parents who fled St. Petersburg after the 1917 Revolution. He was educated at the Russian Military Academy in Belgrade. He emigrated to San Francisco in 1950s and first brought his stock to clients from his car. The Globus Books was opened in 1971. The stock mostly included books by the Russian emigres and thus it contrasted with "Znanie" bookstore that was supported by the Soviet consulate[1]. Also, Azar established Globus Publishing House and Printers. He obtained a Russian-language linotype machine and other equipment to permit publishing small-run books and took great care to publish exclusively stories and memoirs of first generation emigres, pre-revolution and pro-democratic subjects. As a testament to his wide-ranging connections, Azar also located and hired the Russian linotype setter, A. Gibanov[2]. Overall 70 books were published by them[3] until it was closed after Azar's death. Vladimir Azar passed away at his bookstore on July 24th 1984 of a heart attack. Starting with October 1984, Veronica Ahrens-Pulawski took over the store and named it "Globus A Slavic Bookstore". She came to San Francisco some years earlier, worked in "Znaniie" bookstore and taught the Americans to speak Russian. Under the new owner, the stock was significantly enlarged with editions of the Russian diaspora, the selection of antiquarian books was raised as well. In the Globus Store Patricia Polansky had found the rare Russian books published in China, North and South America which became the foundation of the Russian émigré collection at the University of Hawaii. Facing to the Pacific Ocean, the bookstore locates the unique survivals of the Russian Pacific publications that were not listed in the bibliographies[4].
