Godmeghost[1] is a funny Chinese four-frame comic about gods and demons in Chinese mythology. Different from other works of this kind, this comic shows how the gods and demons adapt to new life after the People's Republic of China was founded.

Though having the same names, mythical characters in this comic are totally different from those in old mythical stories. Gods are no longer gods and demons no longer demons, living together peacefully just like what common people do. They wear modern clothes and live in apartments; they have a company and jobs; some of them even play computer games and stream live videos. Their daily life is also full of fun, which always makes readers laugh a lot.

P. S. : The literal meaning of this comic's Chinese name, "非人哉", is "Not humans"(because the characters are literally not humans), which is a phrase used in Classical Chinese.

As to the English name, Godmeghost, it's translated from the original name of this comic, "神么鬼", the pronunciation of which is the same as "什么鬼"(What the hell), "神" meaning "god" and "鬼" meaning "demon"(or ghost). That's a kind of pun.

  • [https://my.mbd.baidu.com/ekkp0fb?f=cp September] 九月[5]

Race: Nine-tailed fox

Age: 200+

(Kind of) The heroine of this comic. A cute girl as well as a sophisticated guy. She likes to stay at home and watch animations, fond of Inuyasha best. So she is now idolizing Inuyasha, transforming her human shape into one similar to his. (Nine-tailed foxes are able to t%ransform, just like many other mythical characters. ) She used to be the classmate of Ao Lie and Yu in middle school, and once fell in love with Xiaotian secretly. Plus, during that time, she was a "chunibyo" (that is to say, she was a bit proud and always made believe that she had super power or she was a god, ect).

Appearance:

1. [https://md.mbd.baidu.com/qjiu7g7?f=cp Human shape] : A girl with white hair, 9 tails and a pair of fox ears. (Just like Inuyasha. ) Before that, she is a common black-haired girl.

2. [https://mz.mbd.baidu.com/8e3v753?f=cp Fox shape] : A nine-tailed white fox.

Prototype in mythologies[6]

Though September is not a mythical character, nine-tailed foxes are common in mythologies. Actually, except the nine-tailed foxes, there're also many foxes who have less than 9 tails whereas they can transfrom into men or women, just like nine-tailed ones. Both the former and the latter are called "Huli jing" (Fox demon) .

In myths, Huli-jings can either be good or bad. However, after the Song dynasty, huli-jings tended to be described as bad demons. Nine-tailed foxes were usually not considered evil, though.

Nine-tailed foxes are really well-known.They can be also seen in Japanese and Korean mythologies. And today, a number of fictions, mangas and animations comprise nine-tailed fox characters.

  • [https://mp.mbd.baidu.com/x7w6a88?f=cp Ao Lie] 敖烈[7]

Race: Chinese dragon

Age: 2000+

Nickname: Lielie 烈烈

The third son of the Dragon King of the West Sea, graduated from University of Dragon Palace (fabled one, just for fun). He used to be the steed of Tang Sanzang, a character in Journey to the west, for which Ao Lie still missed him. He is badly afraid of Nezha because of what Nezha has done (that'll be explained afterwards), while Nezha is fond of him. He is always in formal clothes, and is a bit numb. With an EQ "low to 0" and a poor ability to fall in love, he even thought that September was a boy in middle school. And, like September, he can also transform, even able to spit out water (that's because his throat links to the sea) or flame. He's not good at that, though.

Appearance:

1. [https://mh.mbd.baidu.com/p8c3z1c?f=cp Human shape] : In fact, he is a man with a dragon head, always in business suit.

2. [https://ru.mbd.baidu.com/ml80y0d?f=cp Dragon shape] : A white Chinese dragon with gray fur.

Prototype in mythologies[8]

Ao Lie, known as White Dragon Horse (白龙马), is a character in Journey to the west. He used to be the third dragon prince of the west sea. He once conjured up fire that damaged an invaluable pearl by accident, making Jade Emperor furious. He was about to be executed for this when Guan Yin appeared and persuaded Jade Emperor, letting Ao Lie help Tang Sanzang journey to the west instead so as to make him atone for what he'd done. Nevertheless, he didn't recognize Tang Sanzang, eating his steed consequently. Thus, Guan Yin had to transform him into a horse to carry Tang Sanzang. That's where the name "White Horse Dragon" came from.

At the end of the novel Journey to the west, the White Dragon Horse was ordained as the “Great Strength Bodhisattva of the Eight Heavenly Sections” (八部天龙广力菩萨) and “Dragon Horse of the Eight Heavenly Sections” (八部天龙马).[9]

  • [https://ro.mbd.baidu.com/1ohd3p1?f=cp Yu] 小玉[10]

Race: Jade Hare

Age: Unknown, and never should it be asked about :-)

The first jade hare of Chang'e. Though she is a common worker in Maitreya's company, she is also the CEO of Chang'e's mookcake firm, leading some 80 million jade rabbit workers. She ruturns to the moon once a year to supervise sending mooncakes to the earth. (These companies will be introduced later. )

A cute girl, tender and beautiful. She loves skirt very much. However, she will become in rage when annoyed (like seeing someone eating rabbit meat, being persued by Xiaotian, etc. ) She ruturns to the moon once a year to supervise sending mooncakes to the earth. Besides, she is also a famous blogger in microblog, good at acting cute.

Appearance:

1. [https://mc.mbd.baidu.com/x7ahvwe?f=cp Human shape] : A girl with a pair of rabbit ears and a rabbit tail, always in skirt.

2. [https://mk.mbd.baidu.com/4b0jxj3?f=cp Rabbit shape] : A tiny yellow hare.

Prototype in mythologies[11]

Jade Hare, or Jade Rabbit, is a mythical character known to all Chinese. As a matter of fact, there's only one jade hare in most mythologies, stories of it also varying from one myth to another.

The most common version is that Jade Hare is Chang'e's pet accompanying her. However, another story goes that Jade Hare is actually Chang'e's husband, Hou Yi. As is known, Chang'e had no choice but to go to the Moon Palace and separate from Houyi. And Hou Yi, worrying about her, transformed into a hare in order to be with her, even she didn't know that.

No matter what the stories' contents are, they have one thing in common that Jade Hare lives with Chang'e in the Moon Palace, pounding the elixir of life for her.[12]
