Golden Valley Library

Golden Valley Library is a public library in Golden Valley, Minnesota, United States. It is located 830 Winnetka Avenue North. When it opened it was the 25th branch library in the Hennepin County system.

Golden Valley’s first library location was located on 633 Winnetka Avenue, opening Feb. 17 1958.[1] This original Golden Valley library occupied the basement of the village hall from 1958-1971.[2] This location was replace by its current location on 830 Winnetka Avenue.

The new location first opened in May 1971. The Library had expanded from its 38,000 volume collection to 50,000 after opening in 1971. It was the first library to be built and fully funded by Hennepin County after the passing of State Legislature authorizing the county’s long-range building program in 1969.[3] This legislation was a 15-year building program costing $20 million some of which helped fund the Golden Valley Library. The cost of building the Library was $382,000 and another $88,000 for the land.

The general contractor Loeffel Angstrand.[4] The new building constructed of 8 octagons architect firm was Kilstofte and Vosepjka Inc.[5] The design also included beamed ceilings and skylights in the main rooms, three lounges one with a fireplace, a community room with a separate entrance. The library is on three acres of land overlooking Bassets Creek.[6]

Renovations

The library was renovated in September 2015 and re-opened in January 2016. The cost of the renovation was $1.4 million. With the renovation came two additional public meeting rooms we added, an expansion of the children’s area and a new periodical area. Walls were torn down to open up the space. The carpeting was replaced and new seating shelving and computer tables were added.[7]

Art in the Library

The Golden Valley Library features “Kinetic Sculpture #462” by Jeffrey Zachmann. This piece is a large sculpture found at the library’s entrance.[8] Jeffrey Zachmann is Minnesotan sculptor that specializes in kinetic art pieces.[9]

The other featured art piece found in the library’s entrance is a painting “Urban Street Scene” by Navid Mohseni.[10] This piece was donated to the Hennepin County Library in memory of Naomi Markowitz.
