Grafton J. Nunes is president of the Cleveland Institute of Art. [1]

Early Life and Education

A native of Chelsea, Massachusetts, Nunes is a graduate of Columbia University with a 1981 master of fine arts in film history, theory and criticism, and a 1991 master’s of philosophy in theater history and film studies. He received his 1972 bachelor of arts in English and religion at the College of the Holy Cross.

Nunes, whose father made a career in the Navy, grew up on various military bases, and his mediums of escape were comic books, armed forces radio and movies. [2] His love of films continued while attending the College of Holy Cross to earn his bachelor’s degree in English and religion. At Holy Cross, he immersed himself in the college’s film society. That love of film continued throughout his remaining education.

Career

After earning his MFA in Film at Columbia, he became departmental administrator of the film school there. When the department chairman resigned, Nunes recruited director and screenwriter Milos Forman to replace him and worked very closely with Forman for several years.

Nunes also worked in the film industry. He was an assistant and researcher with Paul Schrader at Paramount Pictures and produced[3] The Loveless, featuring actor Willem Dafoe and directed by Academy Award winning director Kathryn Bigelow and Monty Montgomery.

Nunes served in a number of positions at Columbia University School of the Arts, eventually becoming associate dean from 1990 to 1997. In 1998, he became the founding dean[4] of Emerson College’s school of the arts in Boston. While there, he started a master’s in fine arts program and grew the creative writing and performing arts programs. During his tenure at Emerson, he helped build the School of the Arts to national prominence with 3,000 students taught by 111 full-time and 150 part-time faculty members. He was instrumental in raising funds for new, state-of-the-art facilities that helped transform a historic Boston district.[5]

Nunes became the 10th president of the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2010[6]. He presides over CIA’s 15 programs of study in art and design. In 2015, he completed a six-year, $75 million capital campaign and campus unification project that consolidated operations under one roof in the George Gund building at 11610 Euclid Avenue. [7]
