Günther Schneider-Siemssen (* 7th June 1926 in Augsburg; † 2nd June 2015 in Vienna) was a German-Austrian set designer.

Life

Günther Schneider-Siemssen was born Günther Schneider and adopted his second name, Siemssen, from his maternal grandfather. He spent his childhood and youth in Munich, originally wanting to become a conductor. In a job interview with Clemens Krauss (conductor) he was advised against this and was instead recommended to train in set designing.[1] As a result he studied set design at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München.[2]

From 1951 to 1954, Schneider-Siemssen was the head stage designer of the Salzburger Landestheater, whilst simultaneously being in charge of the Salzburger Marionettentheater. From then until 1960 he was the head stage designer of the Bremen. From 1960 he was employed under Herbert von Karajan for the Wiener Staatsoper and from 1962 to 1986 he was the head stage designer for the Österreichischen Bundestheater (this includes the Vienna State Opera, Vienna Volksoper, Burgtheater and the Akademietheater, Vienna), and also from 1965 for the Salzburg Festival. In this role he created numerous style-defining stage designs. Besides in Vienna he worked in many other major theatres, such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.

A fundamental feature of his works is his use of lighting. He pioneered and developed his own symbolic style of using hand painted projections and sophisticated special effects, which was implemented and put into effect with Ludwig Pani's Large Format Slide Projector. For a production of The Tales of Hoffmann at the Salzburg Marionette theatre in 1985, he brought holographic Technology into use on stage for the very first time.[3]

The main directors who he worked with were Herbert von Karajan (28 stage creations) and Otto Schenk (60 stage creations).

For his expressive interpretations of Wagner he received the „Anton-Seidl-Award“ from the Wagner-Society of New York in 2009.

Personal life

Günther Schneider-Siemssen had been an Austrian citizen since 1973, living in Vienna and Seeham near to Salzburg. He was married and had four children.[4] Schneider-Siemssen passed away in Vienna after long term sickness just prior to his 89th birthday.[5][6] and was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery in an honorary grave (Group 40, Number 187).
