Hal Incandenza is a fictional character created by David Foster Wallace and one of the protagonists of his novel Infinite Jest. BackgroundHarold James Incandenza is a "tennis and lexical prodigy"[1] ranked "the fourth-best tennis player under age eighteen in the United States of America, and the sixth-best on the continent."{{sfn|Wallace|1997|p=193}} When the novel begins, he is a 17 year old high school senior enrolled at Enfield Tennis Academy, a tennis school founded by his late father James Incandenza and run by his mother, Avril Incandenza.{{sfn|Wallace|1997|p=42}}.
