释义 | {{draft article}} Halley's Industrial Motors Ltd, of 116 St Vincent Street Glasgow, made Halley Trucks from 5 July 1906-1935[1]. Halley's was founded and run by George Halley Halley (born 29.10.1877 Glasgow) by taking over the business of the Glasgow Motor Lorry Company. The company grew rapidly to become one of the UK's top truck makers, with branches around the UK and a head office in Vauxhall, London. In 1914 is was declared to be one of the UK's top 10 vehicle makers[1]. It started to fail after the sudden death of its 43-year-old founder and owner, George Halley, on 2nd Jan 1921, after which it was probably run by Joseph Gilmour Pearson (born 4.6.1882), although ownership may have passed to George Halley's 16yr old son David Halley (born 1.7.1904). Halley's suffered in the Great Depression, and in 1926/27 the company went into liquidation. It re-appeared in Jan 1927 as Halley as Halley Motors Ltd, with help from the North British Locomotive Company. It continued on, with perhaps some minor involvement from David Halley's younger brother George Bennet Halley (born 18.11.1907), who had a BSc degree and worked for Harland & Wolfe. The Halley business struggled on until 1935 when the works at Yoker (on Clydebank in Glasgow) were taken over by Albion Motors. [1] |
