Handelot FZC. better known as Handelot, is a parallel market online trading platform for mobile and consumer electronics based in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Handelot was founded in 2008 by Patryk Skowron,^[1] and has grown to establish branches in Wroclaw, Poland, and L'viv, Ukraine. It is free and open to everyone to join, and claims to be the first trading platform of its kind on the internet. Through its online advertising of sponsors and event organization, Handelot has taken a big role in promoting and supporting the parallel market for consumer electronics.

History

Handelot was founded in 2008. Their business model is predicated on the free flow of information and unblocked access for anyone who wishes to buy or sell consumer electronics^[2] (though all accounts are verified before gaining access). As of 2016, Handelot counts over 1,900 retailers and wholesalers^[3] among the members on their platform. Handelot's primary target markets are mobile telephones, game consoles, and home appliances.

Platform

Online Trading Floor

Claiming to be the safest trading platform in the industry, Handelot's portal includes an online rolodex for finding fellow traders, a board where traders can list their product stocks for sale, a mechanism for requesting shipments of particular products, and a job announcements board. The platform also includes a function for alerting users about fraudulent activities and traders perpetuating them, thereby creating a layer of security for traders.

There are three membership tiers: VIP, VIP Gold, and Junior. VIP members have access to all of the above functionalities, whereas VIP Gold members are verified by an insurance company. Handelot recently introduced its Junior Partners program, wherein smaller, less experienced traders may join the site. Junior members have more limited capabilities on the site, however; they can post requests to buy and sell, but not access contact details of VIP Gold members on the rolodex.^[4]

Consulting and Advertising

In addition to the online trading floor, Handelot also offers consulting services that include sales leads, referrals, and general market information. As Handelot is sponsored by many firms in the parallel telecom industry, it offers reciprocal advertising placement on its website as well as in The Handelot Times.

Event Organization

Handelot have long been fixtures at tech trade shows such as Superexpo,^[5] Mobility Days,^[6] and CeBIT. ^[7] ^[8] Since its inception, Handelot has taken initiative in organizing events for traders, initially as partners at global events such as CeBIT and iTech.^[9] In recent years, however, Handelot has taken to organizing its own trader meetups, playing down the trade show aspect while emphasizing the benefits of social interaction and strengthening the community of traders.^[10] Its first solo event was held in Dubai in May 2017, and included traders and participants from all over the world.^[11]

The Handelot Times

In June 2017, Handelot launched The Handelot Times, a bimonthly trade publication with industry news, longform features, shipping analysis, and editorial from some of parallel trading's most respected names. Staples of the Times include The Old Hand, Najib's Corner and Takeaways From The East.
