Shahnawaz Zaidi is an artist, poet, composer, singer, and actor. Biography and Early LifeZaidi was born on 24th of May 1948. His parents are originally from India, Muzaffar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh but migrated to Mandi Bahaudin near Gujrat, Pakistan. The fifth of eleven children, Zaidi and his siblings were home-schooled until Grade 5 as his parents wished to protect them from the mannerism and children of the local area. He excelled in his education and by the age of 14 had completed his matriculation exams. He completed his intermediate education in pre-medical from Islamia College Lahore at the age of sixteen in 1962. Zaidi joined the University of Punjab in 1964 and completed his Masters of Fine Arts in Graphics Design in 1968 at the age of twenty. The following year he won the first prize in a graduating student’s exhibition of Design held at the University of the Punjab. Zaidi married in 1971 and again in 2014 to one of his colleagues, an architect, at COMSATS University Lahore. For family reasons, he moved to Nairobi in the early 1970s and by 1974 he was working as the head of the department in the University of Nairobi. Here he had his four children. Zaidi returned to Pakistan in 1982 and established an advertising agency and worked for two years. Again, he joined the University of the Punjab as an Associate Professor in 1984 and later became principal three times at the department, first in March 1990 to 1999, then from 1999 to 2002 and then after a two-year gap in February 2004 until May 2008. Whilst principal, he established the music department at the University of the Punjab and also created the Musicology at Master’s degree level in the University of the Punjab, at College of Art and Design Lahore. He is currently working at COMSATS University as a Student Advisor, Lahore.[1] Visual ArtsZaidi has not been formally trained as a painter but cites his older sister, Arjumand Shaheen, as his inspiration. He started painting professionally in 1984 when he joined the University of the Punjab as a senior lecturer. His subjects often include socio-cultural subjects such as lower-middle-class people and exploitation of women in society and the state of the environment. His styles and subject matters include Flemish, semi-abstract, satirical, social issues, poetry. He often responds to poetic works in the form of visual arts. In regard to abstract works, Zaidi wanted to prove that it is not an ‘easy’ method and is indeed a genuine project. [1] Performing ArtsPoetryHis first works are in the ‘Ghazal’ form. Whilst living in Kenya he served as the president of “Qawī Sabhā” (assembly of poets) which was established by the poets of Indian or Pakistani origin. [2] His inspirations and influences include: Sahir Ludheyanawi, Josh Malihabadi and Mirza Ghalib, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Nasir Kazmi, Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi and Ahmad Faraz. TranslationHe also translated a book Nobel Prize-winning book of a legendary Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore named “Gītānjalī”.[3] MusicDue to a conservative childhood, Zaidi did not learn music formally however his life in Nairobi influenced his interest in music. Whilst in Nairobi he composed two albums named “Sappnay” and “Kuch Geet”. He is inspired by the Bengali school of music. He performed as “Saydā Khairā” in the play and written the dialogues, designed the stage, composed its music and sung for it as well.
