The Hellenic Malt Whisky Society (HMWS), founded in Athens / Greece in 2010, is a group of friends and “aficionados” sharing the same passion about malt whisky and whisk(e)y in general. History.Hellenic Malt Whisky Society (hereinafter “HMWS”) was founded in 2010 when members of whiskyforum.gr decided to create a formal group of malt whisky appreciators, based on annual subscriptions. It all started back in 2006 when a group of friends gathered at a dedicated whisky shop (Vintage Whisky Shop -VWS and later on the re-branded All About Whisky -AAW) and created a small community. Late 2008 the idea of creating the first ever totally independent (not related with any company or spirits importer) Whisky related society in Greece was introduced to whiskyforum.gr members. As a result, Hellenic Malt Whisky Society was officially founded in 2010 as a formal group of friends. Empowering Whiskyforum.gr – Freely sharing the KnowledgeHMWS aim was and still is, from the first “official” day of existence, to empower whiskyforum.gr and maintain an open, free, accessible to all, thinktank that whisky related information can be easily found. As Hellenic Malt Whisky Society evolved the same happened to whiskyforum.gr with added topics, content, translations of Distilleries’ history, links to external sources, interviews, tasting notes and other whisky related subjects. As a result, HMWS currently operates, maintains and supports Greece’s most vibrant, complete, updated and valuable source of information regarding whisky. Hellenic Malt Whisky Society membersAs mentioned above, many if not all of HMWS members were also members of whiskyforum.gr and known to each other years before the official foundation of HMWS. Therefore, HMWS members decided to maintain the group character as a closed group of friends. In the course of time HMWS accepted new members - which were also whiskyforum.gr members - taking into consideration that all new members share the same passion for whisky and accept the responsibility to contribute and empower whiskyforum.gr Membership - ContributionHMWS considers that members shall contribute on a voluntary basis in terms of content and according to each member available and possible financial contribution. Therefore, and in order to support annual expenses of whiskyforum.gr as well as for HMWS to be able to organize events and purchase malt whisky bottlings, HMWS operates under a minimum possible annual subscription / membership donation. Events - activitiesSince 2010, HMWS organized more than 10 closed / membership only events, and more than 140 open whiskyforum.gr gatherings. In total, more than 1,000 malt whiskies tasted so far. Malt whisky tastings are either performed during organized events or during ad-hoc events, following the basic tasting rule that at least 3 members of HWMS shall be present in order for a malt whisky to be officially included in tasting list. HMWS hosts at least three standard annual events, HMWS tasting of rare whisky event (members only - annual purchases from online shops or auctions), HMWS “new year” opening event and HMWS “closing year” event also known as “Leftovers’ Orgy” which both are open events for whiskyforum.gr members also. HMWS also hosts ad-hoc events or perform activities which are discussed among members and agreed on a contribution basis. LocationsMost of HMWS members are based in Greece. Still, members are also based in other countries (UK, Germany, Cyprus) and therefore events are organized taking into consideration the possibility to match event date with HMWS member’s travelling plan to Greece.
