Henry Hendron is a Celebrity Barrister regulated by the Bar Standards Board of England and Wales [1] . Called to the Bar in 2004, the once tipped leader of the Conservative Party [2] and the former International Kayaker (on the Irish Racing Team) [3] Hendron is acclaimed as one of the legal pioneers in respect of the development of Public Access Work in England and Wales (whereby barristers began taking instructions directly from members of the public without having to first be instructed by a solicitors) [4] ) Hendron represented a string of celebrity clients ranging from musicians such as the band 'Cold Play' to politicians such as the MPs Nadine Dorries MP (who appeared in the Celebrity Jungle) and Nigel Evans MP [5], as well as representing reality TV celebrities such as the winner of the UK's "Apprentice" Stella English when Ms English defending a costs claims brought by Lord Alan Sugar succeeded in her defence against Lord Sugar, with Hendron being widely quoted in the press as exclaiming"my client is over-the-moon" [6] Hendron had a very public falling out with one of his celebrity clients; while representing The Earl of Cardigan- The Lord David Brundel-Bruce Cardigan- in a High Court dispute, Hendron, on his feet at the High Court, referred to the Earl of Cardigan as being "down and out" a reference which caused both Hendron and the Earl of Cardigan to be ridiculed in the national press given that the Earl of Cardigan owns the largest privately owned forest in the UK (the Savernake estate) and lives in sprawling stately home larger than Buckingham Palace. In response to Hendron's reference to the Earl being 'down and out' The Earl of Cardigan fired Hendron on the steps of the Court by calling up the press association immediately after the hearing, Hendron only learning of his dismissal via the papers, with the Earl declaring in the national press "Im not down and out, I’m down to my last stately home" [7] While representing the Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, Nigel Evans MP, at Preston Crown Court on charges of Rape and Molestation [8] Hendron ran into yet more controversy when he published a blog about the trial and referred to the alleged victims of Mr Evans sexual abuse as being 'duplicitous individuals who knew what they were doing'; a remark that saw Hendron summons before the trial judge, His Honour Judge King QC, to explain himself. Hendron was then reported by Judge King to the then Attorney General Dominic Grieve QC MP, for the Attorney General to decide whether or not to bring proceedings against Hendron for contempt of court in respect of the blog post [9] . In the end Dominic Grieve QC MP declined to institute proceedings against Hendron saying that to do so was “not in the public interest”; however not long after Dominic Grieve QC MP decided as Attorney General not to prosecute Hendron there was public outrange when Hendron was snapped laughing and drinking champagne at the Hon. Society of the Middle Temple [10] with both Grieve and Evans [11] In April 2016 Hendron was convicted at The Old Bailey, aka the Central Criminal Court by his own admission of possession with intent to supply Class B and Class C drugs. During an interview with Eddie Marr for BBC Radio 4's PM programme, Hendron spoke of the dramatic turn of events that lead to his public fall from grace; it also came out that on Hendron's second appearance at the Old Bailey (out of 3 appearances on the same matter) Hendron (who at that point was still practising), left the Old Bailey from appearing as a Defendant and then ran the 1/5 mile over to the High Court where he was appearing as Counsel for the one time leader of UKIP, Susan Evans, in a dispute that Evans Had with UKIP after it suspended her from the Party [12]. In what must have been confusing for the press it then emerged via a tweet by the journalist Michael Crick that Henry Hendron had been instructed to represent Susan Evans by his brother and also barrister Richard Hendron, a fact that was confirmed by Susan Evans during a live interview with the broadcaster Ian Dale on Radio 5 Live, with brother Richard Hendron running himself into trouble by apparently threatening UKIPs solicitors. Hendron was suspended from the Bar in April 2016 and which Hendron has spoke of as the start of a drugs bender “that almost killed me” causing Hendron to ratchet up his use of illicit drugs to the point where Hendron on his own confession because a drug addict according to an interview with Gay Star News where Hendron looked drawn and thin, telling the broadcaster that he had been clean from drugs for only 2 weeks but was going to check into rehab to get "properly clean". [13] By March 2019 Hendron had been in rehab and come off drugs and was again causing a stir, this time appearing on the BBC's Question time as a member of the audience stole the show when he got into a verbal fight with another audience member about Brexit [14]. Hendron then delivered to camera a one minute tirade which overnight went viral on the internet attracting over a million views online before the evening was out [15], however earning Hendron much derision as the "shouty man"[16] though others praised Hendron for his tirade including the celebrity broadcaster Katie Hopkins who suggested that Hendron should enter Parliament and be the next Prime Minister. Away from the Courts and the public eye Hendron is said to have a passion for sailing having attempted a solo (unsuccessful) circumnavigation of the globe in his own Yacht called Wight Cat [17]. Hendron is a former international kayaker; Hendron's kayaking achievements include winning and (still) holding the record for the quickest time over the worlds longest canoe and kayak race [18] the 1000 mile Yukon River Quest. In 2004 the UK Parliament raised an Early Day Motion congratulating Henry Hendron and his brother Richard for winning the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race [19] Hendron looks set to return to the Bar in May 2019 [20] References1. ^ https://www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/media-centre/press-releases-and-news/barrister-henry-hendron-suspended-for-three-years-following-criminal-convictions-for-supplying-illegal-drugs/ 2. ^ https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3580931/Celebrity-lawyer-bought-designer-chemsex-drugs-BBC-producer-killed-teenage-boyfriend-spared-jail.html 3. ^ https://edm.parliament.uk/early-day-motion/25185/devizes-to-westminster-international-canoe-marathon 4. ^ https://www.barcouncil.org.uk/media/119600/public_access_guidance_for_lay_clients_-_mar_2010_-_as_at_25_oct_2011__1_.pdf 5. ^ https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2927724/Top-lawyer-34-represented-politicians-celebrities-arrested-death-teenage-boyfriend.html 6. ^ https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/sep/25/alan-sugar-bid-recover-legal-costs-stella-english-fails 7. ^ https://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/property/news/8728080/Earl-of-Cardigan-Im-not-down-and-out.-Im-just-down-to-my-last-stately-home.html 8. ^ https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/apr/10/how-case-against-nigel-evans-fell-apart 9. ^ https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2014/04/10/gay-lawyer-in-nigel-evans-trial-referred-to-attorney-general-by-judge-for-contempt-of-court 10. ^ https://www.middletemple.org.uk/ 11. ^ https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/nigel-evans-barrister-friend-jeopardised-trial-with-online-blog-9251762.html 12. ^ https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p057dths 13. ^ https://www.gaystarnews.com/article/hendron-boyfriend-dead-overdose/#gs.1cquv3 14. ^ https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/fight-breaks-out-between-question-time-audience-members/ 15. ^ https://www.legalcheek.com/2019/03/drug-suspension-barrister-goes-viral-after-pro-brexit-rant-on-bbc-question-time/ 16. ^ https://www.indy100.com/article/question-time-ealing-man-leave-henry-hendron-barrister-8825336 17. ^ https://www.legalcheek.com/2019/03/drug-suspension-barrister-goes-viral-after-pro-brexit-rant-on-bbc-question-time/ 18. ^ https://www.yukon-news.com/sports/paddlers-reach-halfway-point-in-yukon-1000-race/ 19. ^ https://edm.parliament.uk/early-day-motion/25185/devizes-to-westminster-international-canoe-marathon 20. ^ http://courtnewsuk.co.uk/ban-lawyer-bought-chemsex-drugs-killed-lover/ |
