释义 |
Hilda Nannete Blanche Preager Killby (1877-1962) was a plant scientist, who worked under William Bateson, as one of 'Bateson's Ladies'. Hilda entered Newnham College, Cambridge in 1898 and took second class honours in Part 1 of the Natural Sciences Tripos in 1901. She went on to help Bateson replicate Gregor Mendel’s crosses in peas and conducted independent breeding experiments in rabbits and bantam chickens. Hilda assisted both Bateson and Becky Saunders in their hybridisation experiments in the Cambridge Botanic Gardens. During World War 1, Hilda worked at the John Innes Horticultural Institution, helping keep the institute going while so many ‘gardeners had gone to make munitions as part of the war effort.[1] She later worked as a translator of scientific papers for research workers and between 1941 and 1945 worked at Pye Radio Ltd.
