Hiroko Pijanowski (born 1 January, 1942) is a Japanese-born American artist and metalsmith. Her works primarily center around jewelry-making, employing a traditional Japanese metalworking technique known as mokume gane, although she has utilized other mediums for her pieces. Pijanowski is often referenced as a figurehead who has helped to bring mokume gane to the world stage of art, after moving to the United States from Japan. During her early life, her works were focused in drawing and painting. After a hiatus in her studies, she returned to art school to study art history, which she would pursue a degree in. During this time, she studied techniques for metal inlay. During an engagement, she was inspired to return to artwork, and particularly metalwork. After learning of few opportunities for furthering her education in the field in Japan, she moved to the United States to study at California State University. Later, she studied at Cranbrook Academy or Art. While there, she began to work with mokume gane, a traditional Japanese method of metalwork. While at Cranbrook Academy of Art, she met Eugene Pijanowski, who she would later marry. Pijanowski became an influence to her, and they began many collaborations together. On a return to Japan, the two set up a studio in Yokohama, creating and selling contemporary American-style metalwork jewelry, while also studying and furthering the ancient methods of mokume gane. Upon a return to the United States, the two began to show their nearby contemporaries the method, and demonstrate its capabilities.
