The history of women in the Resistenza italiana (Italian Resistance) is a fundamental component of the partisan movement in the fight against Nazi-fascism. They fought to regain the freedom and justice of their country by fulfilling functions of primary importance. In all the cities the partisan women fought daily to recover the goods of maximum necessity for the sustenance of the companions. There were organized groups of women who carried out anti-fascist propaganda, raised funds and organized assistance to political prisoners and were also involved in the maintenance of communications as well as in military operations. The women who participated in the Resistance were part of organizations like Gruppi di Azione Patriottica (GAP), Squadre di Azione Patriottica (SAP), and they also found Women's defense groups, "open to all women of each social class and of any political or religious faith, who wanted to participate in the work of liberation of the country and fight for their emancipation",[1] to guarantee the rights of women, often become heads of families, instead of husbands enlisted in the army.
