Welcome to Her Majesties Coastguard Station Blyth. Blyth Coastguard started life as a Volunteer Life brigade back in the 1900s. Then it had a complement of 100 volunteers ready to risk their lives to save others. at the turn of the century there were a handful of Volunteer Life Brigades form when in 1860's a few ships were sunk in bad weather at the mouth of the Tyne and at Blyth harbour. Volunteer life brigade is a search and rescue organisation which assists in the United Kingdom in coastal emergencies. Around 40 VLB's were established in the mid-to-late 19th century; today just three remain, continuing to provide shore-based search and rescue support from locations on the coast of north-east England. They are akin to, but predate, the volunteer Coastguard Rescue Service (which dates from 1931) and the National Coastwatch Institution (founded 1994). Blyth Volunteer life brigade was founded in 1863 and then changed to Blyth auxiliary coastguard in 1942. These are a few of today's roles in the modern HM Coastguard Blyth Coastguard is now based at {gmap} unit 27 f , cowley road, Blyth, Northumberland, ne24 5tf {gmap} ReferencesHer Majesty's Coastguardhttp://www.dft.gov.uk/mca https://web.archive.org/web/20070516170103/http://www.mcga.gov.uk/c4mca/mcga-hmcg_rescue/mcga-hmcg-history-of-coastguard.htm http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=54 http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20090216121243/http%3A//yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title%3DCoastguard_History |
