HistoryIn 1939, the government of Armenia decided to transform the home of Hovhannes Toumanian into a public museum that now contains approximately 300 valuable objects related to his life and his writing. During his life, Toumanian lived in Tbilisi but drew his greatest inspiration for his works from Lori[1]. His childhood memories and frequent visits to the village became the subject for works such as Anush, Maro, Lori's Sako (Loreci Sako), and Lament (Harachank). In these works, he depicted rural life and expressed his infinite love of nature inspired by the beauty of Lori[2]. Collections and the buildingAlmost 300 valuable objects representing the activity and life of the great writer are preserved here. The House Museum has two floors. The first floor includes a kitchen and a large room where visitors can see objects related to Toumanian's childhood, such as the crib he slept in as a baby, as well as objects typical of life in the 19th century, such as a khnoci (butter churn), and a chakharak (spinning wheel). Two other galleries on the first floor of the house display photographs and documents depicting Toumanian's life and literary activities. On the second floor, visitors can see photographs of the writer from his school years in Jalaloghli and at the Nersisyan school in Tbilisi, his first poem written in 1882-1883, and numerous objects related to his social and political activities. On this floor, visitors can also see Toumanian's personal belongings and different paintings from the writer's own collection. The bust of the poet (created by A. Urartu, in 1953) and a chapel (designed by the sculptor Romen Julhakyan), where the heart of the poet is buried, were built in 1994 in the Museum's garden.
