By today HIA-Hungary has become one of the most significant and internationally recognized Hungarian NGOs.[1] It assists those in need through its expanding community of experts, volunteers, donors and corporate partners. [2]Hungarian Interchurch Aid performs its activities regardless of gender, religion, or nationality, aiming to provide effective assistance to our fellow human beings. Regardless of nationality, religion, and ideology, HIA-Hungary provides assistance to those in need in Hungary, and in the international arena as a member of the international assistance community in accordance with the strictest professional and transparency rules. [3]GoalsAssistance to those in needHIA-Hungary’s objective is to deliver quick, professional and effective assistance to victims of natural and man-made disasters. Fight against povertyThe objective of HIA, through its institutions and programmes, is not only to provide emergency aid but also to provide individuals willing to take actions to catch-up with society with opportunities to break out of poverty. Stronger social solidarityHIA aims to strengthen social solidarity through spreading the culture of volunteering and giving in Hungary. [4]ActivitiesActivities in HungaryHIA has social and development centres in 13 settlements. The nationwide institutional network primarily intends to offer opportunities to break-out from poverty in addition to temporary help. In Hungary, the organisation provides help for families and children in need, homeless people, addicts, victims of ill-treatment and disasters. International activitiesSince its founding in 1991, HIA has carried out humanitarian, development aid programmes in 39 countries. Several key regions have humanitarian and development centres that ensure the organisation’s continuous presence in the given country. In the international arena, the organisation focuses on humanitarian aid, reconstruction, education development, agriculture and rural development, capacity building, and support for local communities and initiatives. Countries in focusIraqHungarian Interchurch Aid launched its first aid program in Iraq in 2003, and since then, after the rise of the Islamic State, it has supported internal refugees and Syrian refugees since 2014. In 2016, HIA opened its office in Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan with the objective of providing humanitarian aid and long-term development programs through effective assistance for the well-being of families in difficult situations due to the war. This was possible with the support of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. HIA focuses on supporting the repatriation of persecuted Christian minorities. The centre set up in Bashiqa in 2018 serves to support families returning to their homes to restart their lives. The Iraqi activities of HIA are carried out through the humanitarian representation in Erbil, under the supervision of headquarters in Hungary. The field staff includes Hungarian expatriates along with local staff and experts. As a member of the ACT Alliance, the organisation’s programs are implemented in co-operation with ongoing international co-operation and local partners. [5]UkraineHungarian Interchurch Aid has been operating a permanent representation in Ukraine for over 17 years. The value of the contribution exceeds HUF 1 billion. Throughout the past years, HIA has supported the population in need through the Berehove development centre. This support primarily includes labour market development, development programs for children, legal and social counselling, accredited vocational training programs and humanitarian aid. In addition to the permanent social and development programs, due to the economic crisis resulting from the protracted war situation, HIA also launched an emergency aid program to assist the population in Transcarpathia in need of assistance. As part of the international ACT Alliance, HIA has been involved in several locations supporting internally displaced persons and individuals living in war zones since 2014. The large aid program provided support to more than 50,000 people in 543 settlements in the following 10 regions of Ukraine: Transcarpathia, Ivano Frankivsk, Lviv, Kherson, Kyiv, Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia. AfghanistanSince 2001, the organisation has implemented humanitarian and development programs in Central Asia, which has been hit by wars for decades. Through its co-ordinated role in its permanent on-site offices, it has been able to provide direct assistance to more than half a million people. The total value of the programs has exceeded EUR 13 million over the past fifteen years. Their aim is to achieve sustainable results in the fields of education, rural development, public administration development, health and capacity building, contributing to democratization processes. In addition to development activities, numerous victims of natural disasters were helped in the region. HIA currently works together with the World Food Programme to execute diverse humanitarian programmes, such as asset creation, food for work, school feeding, vocational skills training, cash and vouchers programmes. Awareness-raisingAs an important part of team building, HIA presents cause and effect relationships, to explain the purpose behind its activities. HIA not only calls on everybody to think together but also to work and act together. They believe that they can also contribute to a better world by raising awareness of the organisation's activities that have societal and global implications. International NetworksHIA is an active and acknowledged member of several international alliances. HIA’s contacts with governmental and non-governmental organisations extend beyond borders: since its foundation, HIA has been working together with numerous foreign organisations in relief and development activities. European Union: In 2003 HIA, as the first Hungarian organisation concluded a framework agreement with ECHO, the EU’s body responsible for humanitarian assistance. It allows HIA to implement humanitarian actions with the support of the European Union. In addition to this, in the framework of cooperation with UN agencies, several national and international humanitarian and development programmes were implemented and financed by EuropeAid, the EU’s coordinating body for development issues. ACT Alliance: ACT Alliance is a coalition of 140 churches and faith-based organisations working together in over 100 countries to create positive and sustainable change in the lives of poor and marginalised people. Almost from the very first moment of its foundation, HIA closely cooperates with ACT Alliance. In the bond of ACT, HIA, as the only Hungarian member, has undertaken an active role in numerous international humanitarian and development programmes. EURODIACONIA: EURODIACONIA is an ecumenical alliance of European churches and NGOs working both on national and international levels. The organisation brings together diaconal and social institutions and church communities and also cooperates with civil members of society. AccountabilityIn order to increase accountability, Hungarian Interchurch Aid introduced a unified system for both individual and corporate donations. Each project has a specific identification number, so donations can be tracked. 85% is directly spent on the support of the aid program indicated by the donor. 9% is spent on covering indirect costs related to aid programs, 6% is spent on feedback towards the donors and on community and communication activities that encourage active social solidarity. HIA was the first organisation in Hungary to submit itself to audits performed on the basis of the strictest KPMG standards. Following the annual audits, their annual narrative reports and financial statements sent to partners can be accessed from the organisation’s website. HIA-Hungary is a Signatory of the Code of Conduct for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Disaster Relief. Besides HIA’s own policies and internal regulations, HIA follows ACT Alliance rules and regulations as well as the Sphere standards. As an ECHO FPA holder, HIA is committed to providing professional and effective humanitarian aid worldwide. Achievements
