Dr. Hussain Hindawi, also known as Hussain Hindawi, is an author, poet, editor, UN Senior political Adviser in the UNAMI, and formerEditor-in-Chief of the Arabic Services of the London United Press International (UPI). He is also a member of the National Union of Journalists and the Foreign Press Association in the UK, Member of the Union of Writers in Iraq, Chairman of (Iraq Foundation for Creativity), a nongovernmental Foundation that specializes in publicizing and diffusing arts and literature. He is best known of being the first chairman of Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC),[1] organizing the first elections in Iraq since Saddam Hussein's regime, and Presidential Advisor

Early Life

Hindawi was born in the Babylonian province of Al-Hindiya in 1947 Iraq.

The family moved to the capital city of Baghdad mid-1961, hoping to provide a better future for the children. Hindawi went on to work in a nearby printing press, along with his younger brother, to provide for their family and while he studied at the prestigious University of Baghdad. He received his Bachelor's degree in Philosophy in 1970 with a reputation for participating in poetry competitions.

Immigration to France

As a rising journalist, Hindawi wrote often of his dislike of Saddam Hussein's methods of ruling, leading Saddam Hussein's thought police to try to torture him into writing in support of the Baathist regime.[2] After suffering numerous injuries during a protest at the Freedom Square, one of Baghdad's best-known areas, Hindawi fled to Syria via Kurdistan by foot,[2] and from there obtained a Visa to France. There, he resumed his education while building a life in Paris, then moved to Poitiers. He graduated from the University of Poitiers with a certificate in French, a DEA and a PHD in Philosophy.

Amnesty,UPI and Electoral Commission

In 1990, Hindawi served as a Human Rights consultant for the development work in Yemen and then worked as a research consultant in Lebanon. He then transferred to the UN and worked in Haiti for almost three years, assisting in the International Civilian Mission in Haiti (MICIVI), a UN scheme. His work attracted a considerable amount of fame, especially amongst his colleagues and even with the local Haitians. Hindawi then began work in 1995 as the Editor-In-Chief of the London Office of the United Press International, in the Arabic Services. Up until mid-2004, his work was admirable and was noticed by many popular figures in Journalism. He left this position when he was requested to serve as the First Chairman of Iraq's first Independent Electoral Commission[3], a very challenging position as Saddam Hussein's regime had just fallen. Nevertheless, Hindawi moved to Baghdad and successfully produced and managed the first successful elections since 1979. Worries and doubts surrounded Hindawi, and even then-Prime Minister Tony Blair paid a surprise visit to Iraq to urge Iraqis to vote.[4] The outcome was miraculously triumphant, and so he continued this position until Mid-2007. He then re-joined the United Nations, this time serving in the Iraqi branch (known as the UNAMI), as the Senior Political Advisor, until 2009. In 2010, he combined his position and became the Senior Political and Electoral advisor.[5]

Bibliography

Hindawi has published 11 books, mostly Research-based, in both Arabic and French.[6] Only two of his books give us an insight to his life: One of them a collection of poems titled "AKHADID" ({{lang-ar|اخاديد}}), which has been critically acclaimed and the other about his childhood town, Al-Hindiya. Most of his poems have been published in various magazines and translated into dozens of languages. He also participated in an Arabic magazine named ASWAT, meaning "Voices" in Arabic. He was also one of the founders of an Iraqi foundation called Iraq for Creativity, which has operated in many regions in the country.
