Ikbal El Alailly was a Surrealist writer, poet and important figure within the Egyptian Surrealists movement in Egypt in the 1930s. Ikbal was the granddaughter of Ahmed Shawqi, nicknamed "The Prince of Poets" (Amīr al-Shu‘arā’Arabic:[1] أمیر الشعراء ). Ikbal was known to attend the meetings regularly held at "Tommy's Bar" in Cairo of the Art and Liberty movement, Collaborator on the groups work she aided in organizing exhibitions, preparing its periodicals, publishing other collective works such as "Don Quichotte, Al-Tattawor (Evolution), La Séance Continue (The Seance Continues), and Le Part du Sable (The Sands Share)". Apart from these surrealist writings, Ikbal El Alailly is well known for her anthology of German pre-surrealist poetry and prose, Vertu de l'Allemagne [The Virtue of Germany] (1945), for which she wrote the introduction. Sometimes referred to as her magnum opus, the anthology was referred to as "an inspiring attempt to heighten public awareness of one of the wellsprings of surrealist thought".[2] She was married to Georges Henein (1914-1973) in 1954 although when they met in 1939, it was reportedly love at first sight. After George Henein's death, Ikbal devoted her time to publishing Henein's unpublished work and reprinting his older material (from her apartment in Paris). In her later years, Ikbal encouraged young Egyptian artists to continue in the Surrealist tradition, especially that of the 1970s, which saw a renewed Arab Surrealist Movement.
