iliana emilia garcia (born 1970) is a multidisciplinary Dominican artist whose main subject matter is the chair.[1][2][3] Her artwork and personal papers are held at The Smithsonian American Art Museum. [4] She was born into a family of writers and artists in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Like author bell hooks, iliana emilia garcia does not capitalize her name.

Education

In 1989 garcia graduated Summa Cum Laude[5] with an AAS degree from Altos de Chavon School of Design, in the Dominican Republic. A year later, in 1990, she was granted a scholarship to attend a summer program at Parsons School of Design, where she later received her BFA in Communication Design. [6]

Awards & Honors

  • Goya Residency, Fundacion Niños de Cristo/Fundación Maestro Cares, 2018.[7]
  • Emerge 8, Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, Newark, NJ [8]

Works

Yo. Aquí, Allá En Todas Partes/ I. Here, There and Everywhere, 2015

According to garcia, her use of the chair image provides her art with historical meaning. For her, chairs are a symbol of tradition, craftsmanship, and culture, specifically showing the story of her country, Dominican Republic.[9] Garcia believes that her art represents the emotional history of objects, such as the chair. [10]

  • Almas Transparentes, 2001

One of garcia's earliest works, before her installation pieces. This is a small scale work made of charcoal on paper. [11]

  • Story Piles, 2012

This installation used many different chairs hung from the ceiling, some with neon strings. Per the artist, these individual chairs represent people and events that pass through our lives.[12] In this way, the installation is a representation of history and the way it is always being changed, but individual people, like the chairs, will remain resistant against this change.[13]

  • The Pursuit of Happiness/Buscando Felicidad, 2014

This installation, made with wood, rope, metal hooks, and silkscreen. This piece shows images of abstract chairs against the wall, producing a vision of movement which garcia believes represents humans, this piece is about how we are always moving and migrating, producing memories and history. [14]

  • Historias acumuladas, 2015

This is a three part series of works made with acrylic, ink, charcoal, and pencil on canvas. This series was created in 2015, right before the piece "I. Here, There and Everywhere", and was a clear inspiration for its production. [15]

The Sage and the Dreamer, 2018

In 2018 one of garcia's installation pieces was exhibited at BRIC, an arts organization dedicated to presenting free cultural programming and material in Brooklyn, New York.[16] This installation was made by stacking 40 bamboo woven chairs that were then suspended in the air. garcia has stated that this piece is in itself a celebration of garcia's Dominican culture, both through the actual production of the chairs, and through their symbolism. Bamboo woven chairs are native to The Dominican Republic, but have not been popularly used in about a decade. In order to create this installation, she commissioned a retired chair maker to build 40 chairs for the exhibit.[17][18]
