}}IMAGO is a one of a kind, analog, walk-in, large format photo camera.[1] It creates 1:1 scale analog self-portraits of people on photographs sized 200 x 62 cm via direct exposure. Since no negative is created, every image - the Imagogram, is unique. The camera was built in the 1970's by German physicist Werner Kraus and artist Erhard Hößle.[2] At it’s core is an optical system invented by Werner Kraus for scientific purpose. The camera was archived from 1978 until 2006, when it was rediscovered an rebuilt by the inventor's daughter, artist Susanna Kraus.[3]

History

In 1970’s physicist Werner Kraus was commissioned to photographically document the Daimler-Benz Wankel engine’s combustion cycle. For this purpose he invented an extremely fast lens which captured images on a 1:1 scale. Later together with artist and sculptor Erhard Hößle, they build the IMAGO Camera. Celebrated in Munich’s art scene at the time of the Fluxus-movement. It operated for several years, but was archived in 1978 due to cessation of production of the unique photographic paper essential for it’s operation.[4]

In 2004, Photographs made with the camera in the 70's were rediscovered by the artist Susanna Kraus, the daughter of the inventor, in the storage of her father's house in Munich.[5] She decided to bring the camera back to life. For the following year she was trying to find a manufacturer who would redevelop the direct positive paper and in 2006 convinced ILFORD Switzerland to develop and start the production of the Harman Direct Positive Paper.[6] In the end of 2006, the first exhibition of the photos made by the rebuilt IMAGO Camera was held in Vienna. After several years of traveling and exhibitions, in 2011, the rebuilt camera inhabited a new photo studio started by Susanna Kraus in the Aufbau Haus building on Moritzplatz, Berlin Kreuzberg. It has been operating on the location since.[7]

Charactistics

IMAGO is a large format camera measuring 7x3x4 meters. It is designed to capture life size analog images of subjects inside it. The camera is equipped with an optical system, specially constructed for it, with an extremely high focal length allowing pictures to be taken on a 1:1 scale, without warping. The camera features a special internal setting of six strobe lights providing a high intensity light necessary for production of the large direct exposure images on paper, which is considerably less photosensitive then film. The Camera produces 62 x 200 cm sized black and white prints on IMAGO and [https://www.ilfordphoto.com/harman-direct-positive-paper-sheets?___store=ilford_brochure Harman Direct Positive Paper]. Inside the camera one sees a true-sided reflection of one’s self in a special mirror acting as a viewfinder. The exposure is taken by the subject through releasing a trigger.[8]

Photo Paper

Imago Camera uses silver gelatin direct positive photographic paper developed in cooperation with ILFORD Switzerland and [https://www.harmantechnology.com/ HARMAN Technology] specially for IMAGO.[9] It is made for direct exposure and reacts as soon as an image is exposed onto it. The exposed paper is developed in a conventional black and white process taking ten minutes, after which the photo is ready. Resulting high-contrast images display shades ranging from the darkest black to the brightest white.[10]

Notable people who made their self-portraits with IMAGO

Nick Cave, Robert Wilson, Eva Mattes, Jonathan Meese, Ernst Fuchs (artist), Wim and Donata Wenders.[11]

Further Developments

In 2014 the IMAGO technology was redeveloped and wrapped in a new design shell. An Aluminum Camera - IMAGO Photour was designed to be mobile. It was transported by a 7.5 ton truck and had a capacity of being assembled within a day on a new location. IMAGO's first tour destination was Rotterdam, where the first IMAGO Photour exhibition was held.[11]

Press

»In the era of smartphone photography this camera turns the circumstances

of photoart upside down.

No manipulations or repetition. No playing games with the variables of digital

enhancement. This ist the answer to the picture flood caused by mobile

phones and other devices.«

Süddeutsche Zeitung

»Irritation is the moment when you see yourself through the eyes of someone

else ... Self-dramatization

par excellence.«[12]

Die Welt

»All of the portrayed are amazed by the extraordinary effect of the images

brought by this peculiar photo booth. A touch of silver gelatin blurs the

large-format photos. The photos are also so expressive that they almost seem

like an existential stage production of Faust. ...«[13]

Der Spiegel

»Everything is possible: the pose, the imaginative game with one’s own appearance

or, with the right kind

of courage and poise, an intimate encounter with one’s individual reflection.

Looking one’s own image in the face without any sign of fear.«

„Spectacular and unique life-size prints.“

Hamburger Abendblatt

„… For all its old fashioned futurism worthy of a Frith Lang film, the Imago

camera is part of a small but steady renaissance of analog photography,

especially of the instant sort… „[14]

The New York Times

»And best of all, anyone can use it.«

The New York Times Style Magazine

»Large format photography, the portrayal of life in the format 1:1, this is the

dream from the replay of reality as truth, that is the dream of photography as

the witness of reality and truth. Imago adds the dimension of imagination to

this dream, another dream.«
