Infermedica is a healthcare IT company founded in 2012[1] in Poland that develops innovative medical software based on artificial intelligence technologies[2][3]. It creates an intelligent decision support systems for triage and preliminary medical diagnosis, for use by patients, physicians and other medical professionals. The company is supported by the European private and institutional investors such as RTAventures, InnovationNest[4] and Venture Inc[5][6][7] and is a part of a startup healthcare accelerator DreamIT Health based in Philadelphia[8]. It employs over 30 people that include doctors, engineers and data scientists.[9]

In 2016 Infermedica was one of the 9 Polish companies selected for funding in the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument[10][11][12]. The company is one of the key vendors in healthcare artificial intelligence market[13][14].

Infermedica’s business model is subscription-based and B2B-only. The products are offered globally as white-labeled solutions to organizations such as: health insurance companies, hospitals, telehealth companies, self-insured employers and health IT companies[15].

Product

Company core product is a symptom checker platform for patients that uses AI to perform a preliminary diagnostic interview. The AI suggests the most suitable and cost-efficient action to take such as visiting or calling a doctor, self-care treatment or going to an emergency department in case of highly severe symptoms. Infermedica assists patients in making the best decisions regarding their symptoms and allows healthcare companies to save money by making sure that patients use the proper services to treat their health issues.

Infermedica is available in the form of three complementary SaaS products:

  • HealthForm - a white-labeled enterprise-level platform for symptom checking and clinical decision support.
  • Call Center Triage platform - cloud-based software that helps operators in making informed triage recommendations.
  • Infermedica API[16] - open developer portal that allows integrating the diagnostic engine into 3rd party software[17][18].

Company products are available in 12 language versions and are CE certified (as Medical Device class I)[19].

Technology

The core of Infermedica’s technology is a scalable and high-performance recommendation engine, which is a proprietary technology. Provided with patient’s symptoms and risk factors, the engine allows to process data in the knowledge base and compute the probabilities of likely conditions.

Looking at the platform architecture, Infermedica has two primary components. The inference engine and the medical knowledge base. The inference engine is an advanced statistical algorithm designed to resemble reasoning of expert level human diagnosticians. The system uses a scalable and efficient distributed reasoning engine based on multiple Bayesian networks.[20] The medical knowledge base is developed and curated by the team of doctors and data extraction algorithms. The database currently includes over 800 conditions[9][21], 1,500 symptoms[22] and lab tests results.

The company claims to score 92% accuracy in listing the correct diagnosis in validation tests performed against real patient cases from The British Medical Journal, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association, and others[23].

Implementations

Infermedica has been implemented by some international companies such as Allianz, Dovera[24], Everyday Health or Medicover[25].

Infermedica products have been used so far by over 3 million patients worldwide[26]. It has a mobile symptom checker application Symptomate available from Google Play[27]. The company released the first symptom checker voice assistant for three major voice platforms: Amazon Alexa[28], Microsoft Cortana[29], and Google Assistant[30].
