Integrated Energy NetworkThe Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) released the Integrated Energy Network report[1] in February 2017. The report describes an integrated energy network (IEN) as a desired end-state of energy services that integrate with the resources they utilize. Currently, these services are provided by diverse and disconnected systems - such as heating, lighting, transport, and industrial automation - but the IEN frames consideration of whether they should be provided through a more integrated system of systems. As customer expectations rise with respect to reliable, affordable, and cleaner energy as well as greater control of energy options, the integrated energy network frames a future in which customers have the flexibility to use, produce, and manage energy efficiently, in ways they prefer.[2] The IEN is an invitation to contribute new ideas and approaches to plan from three perspectives[3]
In 2018, EPRI released the report, Developing a Framework for Integrated Energy Network Planning[4], describing challenges facing electric power system planners and regulators. Also, it describes the drivers and needs for increased communication and coordination among generation, transmission, and distribution planners, and among industries that are becoming more interdependent with the electric sector. The challenges for electric system resource planning include[4]:
