Personal Life

Irene Lusztig is a filmmaker and amateur seamstress. She was born on August 13, 1974, in Coventry, England to Romanian parents. Although she grew up in Boston, she has lived in France, Italy, Romania, China, and Russia. Lusztig currently lives in the Santa Cruz Mountains.[1]

Career

Lusztig's film Reconstruction, which was released in 2002, tells the story of her Romanian maternal grandmother, who was sentenced to life in prison for taking part in a bank heist in 1959. The film explores issues of gender and authoritarian politics through the personal lens of Lusztig's family history. The film is composed of archival footage and interviews, as well as come contemporary images.[2] The film was very well-received, winning three awards. Her most recent film, Yours in Sisterhood, explores the unpublished letters sent to Ms. Magazine in the 1970s. This film discusses history and second-wave feminism in the context of the most recent wave of feminist politics.

Lusztig has had her films screened around the world. This includes screenings at Berlinale, the MoMA, the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Anthology Film Archives, the Pacific Film Archive, Flaherty NYC, IDFA Amsterdam, Hot Docs, AFI Docs, and RIDM Montréal. Her work has also been screened on television in the U.S., Europe, and Taiwan.

Lusztig has received grants from the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the LEF Foundation, New York State Council for the Arts, and the Sustainable Arts Foundation.

She has also receive fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, the Flaherty Film Seminar, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and Harvard’s Film Study Center. She was the 2016-17 recipient of the Rydell Visual Arts Fellowship, as well as a Fulbright Fellowship in Portugal.

Lusztig is currently an asociate professor of Film & Digital Media at UC Santa Cruz, where she teaches filmmaking[3]
