IT 4.0 is an industry term for a new generation of information technology infrastructure and architecture.

Information technology has evolved through major stages:

1. Infrastructure based on mainframe computers
2. Client-server model of handing distributed applications
3. Mobile cloud computing, bringing computational resources to mobile users, network operators, as well as cloud computing providers
4. Edge computing, in which computation is performed on distributed nodes consisting of smart devices or edge devices

IT 4.0 is characterized by more machine-to-machine communication than in the past, as well as significant artificial intelligence infrastructure to analyze and filter the large amounts of data being communicated between machines.
