}}Jackson Kort Oswalt (born January 19, 2018) is an American nuclear physics enthusiast. In 2018, at age 12, he produced nuclear fusion using a fusor, making him the current youngest to do so and the first kid to do fusion.[1][2]

Personal life and education

Jackson Oswalt was born in 2005 in Memphis, Tennessee to Chris and Jennifer Oswalt. Jackson currently attends Memphis University School.

In February 2018, Jackson was recognized as the first kid to build and operate a nuclear fusion reactor at age 12, replacing Taylor Wilson as the youngest "fusioneer"[3]. He now looks to start an organization to fund the projects of kids like himself. In a local news publication Oswalt states:

{{quote|I’m going to continue to pursue nuclear engineering and projects similar to the fusion reactor. My next step, hopefully, is to start an organization to fund kids who want to explore science but don’t have the same opportunities to get the money from their parents to do their own projects…to be able to allow kids who want to do what I did that don’t necessarily have the funding to be able to do it. That would be awesome.|Jackson Oswalt, November 7, 2018[4]}}

Scientific projects

Fusion reactor

In 2018, Oswalt achieved nuclear fusion using an Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) device, which was a variation of the fusor, invented by Philo T. Farnsworth in 1964. Oswalt's reactor demonstrates the capabilities of smaller fusors that are more efficient, more compact, and cheaper to produce than larger, more expensive iterations of the same device.[5]>[6]
