He has founded or led several small religious groups including, at present, the Catholic Church {{sic|of}} England and Wales,[1] not to be confused with the Catholic Church in England and Wales. Atkinson-Wake previously led the {{sic|Roman Catholic}} Society of Pope Leo XIII and the {{sic|Roman Catholic|nolink=y}} Society of St. John Paul II, but in spite of using the term 'Roman Catholic', none of Atkinson-Wake's groups have ever been considered part of the Roman Catholic Church.[2] Atkinson-Wake's activities have succeeded, however, in prompting discussion in Roman Catholic circles and in the international Catholic press about the status of Independent Catholic groups.[3][4][5]

Ordination and ministry

James Atkinson-Wake was born David Bell in Northern Ireland in August 1970.[6] He joined an Independent Catholic group after becoming acquainted with Bishop John Christopher Simmons of Ashford, Kent. Atkinson-Wake was ordained in June 2006 as a bishop in the Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church (ICAB), which separated from the Catholic Church in 1945, but he severed contact with ICAB some time later.[7] In turn, ICAB distanced itself from Atkinson-Wake, partly over increasingly critical publicity in the worldwide Catholic press (see below), and partly over his practice of ordaining women.[8] After separating from ICAB, Atkinson-Wake asserted his role as a leader of Independent Catholics and claimed to have 8.5 million followers.[9]

Recent ministries and controversies

In recent years Atkinson-Wake has caught the attention of the Catholic press for apparently gaining access to papal events in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City,[10] for reportedly seeking (unsuccessfully) to unite his group to the Catholic Church,[11] and for attempting to launch Independent Catholic groups (broadly considered antagonistic to the Roman Catholic Church)[12] in Italy and the Philippines; these activities have repeatedly been described as schismatic by the Catholic Church.[13] In 2012 the Vatican affirmed that Atkinson-Wake had incurred automatic (latae sententiae) excommunication along with those ordained by him.[14] Atkinson-Wake defends his actions as being in keeping with his role as a bishop; he affirms that he is truly a Catholic bishop and cites a canon lawyer in the Philippines who stated that his ordination meets the appropriate criteria.[15] James Atkinson-Wake has used various titles including Archbishop of Stoke-on-Trent,[16] Archbishop of Birmingham & Dudley,[17] Archbishop of London,[18] Bishop of Cambridge and Cardinal.[19]
