The James Family is a minor Gentry Family which originates from the County of Kent. Related to the Barons Northbourne through John James, son of

Sir Walter James, 1st Baronet and father of Walter James, 1st Baron Northbourne.

Mark James, grandson of John James, born in 1844 went to St. Paul's School, London, later to Trinity College, Oxford, where he studied Theology. He was later ordained 1864, at this point he went out to Bermuda as a missionary and helped with the construction of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, Bermuda in 1867. He remained in Bermuda as Archdeacon. During this time, in a trip back to England and married Hilary Rankin, they had three children, Philip, Mark and Harry born (1890, 92 and 95 respectively). Philip remained in England, Mark went out to India, and started a tea-plantation, whilst Harry went out to Florida and married into an Orange plantation. All three children were educated at The King's School, Canterbury Mark and Harry went on to Oxford, but Philip went to King's College London Medical School.

Philip James, became a Military Doctor in the First World War, and was awarded the Military Cross. He married and had three children: Philip, Hilary and Pamela. Philip, the son, went to Charterhouse School, then on to Magdalen College, Oxford,where he studied Law. He then went on to the Bar, and later became a Lecturer of Law at Oxford University. He helped start Amnesty International with his friend of the time, Peter Benenson. James later became Professor of Law at Leeds University, and went on to help start Buckingham University.

Mark James, went to India and had a son, Bertram James, educated at King's School, Canterbury. Bertram won a Military Cross for service in the Second World War, and was a member of The Great Escape.
